Etymology of Oxymoron

in etymology •  7 years ago

The word oxymoron comes from oxy- meaning sharp or acid, it is also seen in oxygen, because of the belief that it was required for the formation (-gen) of acids (oxy-). The second part, moron, as you know, means idiot. In this way, oxymoron, is in itself an oxymoron, due to the contradicting terms, sharp and dumb.
