The European Union (EU) today rejected the suggestion of the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to move its embassies to Jerusalem and recognize it as the capital of the State of Israel, as the United States has done.
"I know that Netanyahu expects others to follow Trump's decision to move their embassies to Jerusalem. You can maintain your aspirations for others, because on the side of the EU and its Member States, this decision will not come, "settled the EU's high representative, Federica Mogherini, at a press conference after a Council of Community Ministers.
Before their meeting, the ministers received Netanyahu for an informal breakfast that lasted about two hours, during the first visit of an Israeli prime minister to the EU institutions in Brussels in 22 years.
The objective was to address the bilateral relationship and the future of the peace process after the US announcement. on Jerusalem and Netanyahu was blunt to the press upon his arrival: "I think that all or most of the European countries will move their embassies to Jerusalem, recognize that it is the capital of Israel and will be clearly involved with us in security, prosperity and peace, "he said.
Although he acknowledged that "we still do not have an agreement", he predicted that "this is what will happen in the future".
Instead, Mogherini stressed that "the EU will continue to respect the international consensus on Jerusalem until the final status of the city is resolved through direct negotiations of the two sides. It was a clear and united message, "he said.
