My Everyday Silver

in everydaysilver •  7 years ago

I saw @stnwllstrtgc is hosting a challenge for "everyday silver" and I had to jump in. First, it amuses me because as a child we had "the good silver" and "the everyday silver" and back then, the "everyday silver" was stainless steel.

"Good silver" became something of a white elephant, no one wanted to have to polish the silverware before the big holiday dinner. As the elder women in my family passed away, I wound up with odds and ends of their real silverware. I made this mismatched stuff my everyday silver...

SHINY!

It is more than just a pretty face, it is actually self-sanitizing. If you think about the properties of colloidal silver, you will understand. Where wooden handles can harbor bacteria and aluminum and pot metal can be toxic, my "everyday silver" kills pathogens and may even give me a little immune boost.

The origins of "born with a silver spoon" might surprise you.

One of the cool things I discovered by changing to silver is that my dairy products last longer if I dip sour cream, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc with a silver spoon. I have done a side by side comparison and using CLEAN stainless caused mold to begin to grow - right where I dipped - almost a week sooner than in the tub I dipped with a silver spoon.

Another interesting tidbit... The stuff I have out for use does not really tarnish, not compared to the stuff still stored. As I pull this stuff out it occurs to me, I have been using some of this since I was a baby!

Ladle Art!

We do not really display our silver much. It is not that we have such a huge stack, it's just that we prefer to not deal with... well...

I approve of this message!!

Lol! You are silly!

Yes! (And I approve that message, too!)
Thanks for talking about silver. People need to be reminded that it can be part of our lives, not just as money or investment.

Love the clip about healots! I didn't know about the silver spoons not promoting bacterial growth in dairy products. See I learned something new today! Thanks, @fishyculture for sharing.

Thanks for reading my post - I TRY to make them worth the effort lol!

How easy it it to keep the every day stuff clean?

I don’t know what my silverware is made out of - I wonder every time I read you silver lined blog.

I hand wash, no room for a dishwasher in this old house! It is very easy to keep clean that way. If using a dishwasher you do not want to use any lemony stuff, it is really hard on silver. Most silverware is stainless steel these days, and it is a pretty good metal. Not toxic at least, and silver is a little softer so shows the wear and tear.

Lol. I hand wash too.

My mom gave me some “nice” silverware and they stained. I hope it’s not real silver... (I’m sure it’s not) since my husband and kid sometimes take them for lunch and rarely bring them back...

Well, real silver will discolor faster than stainless... or maybe you don't want to know that? lol! Try a little comet on it, if it polishes up it may be silver. A LITTLE comet, and rinse well!

hmmm. maybe i'll just ask my mom...

There ya' go - that is the easy button lol!

I love real silver. It just feels better in the hand and looks amazing. My MIL keeps her daily silver (real too) in an antique wooden untensil tray on the counter in her kitchen, rather then in a drawer, which I thought was a fun way to enjoy it and also easy to get to it.
I always wanted to have a collection of silver snuff boxes. I only have a few now, but somehow , as a child, I always thought I'd be the type of old person who'd have a collection of silver snuff boxes under glass cases, I was an odd child :)

Lol! Most interesting adults were odd children.... or so I like to tell my odd little self!
I like the idea of a display box, might have to try that!

I think it is actually a cutlery box, it's old wood with a cute handle carved in the top.

True that about odd children :)

Thats fantastic!! Your everyday silver is far more practical and useful than mine, mine is just fun to look at!
Thanks for sharing with us and thanks for entering my little challenge!

Thanks for hosting! Always fun to play with the shiny!

Nice set you have there @fishyculture . And that video is funny with some truth to it. Although I still would rather be a helot, than a person without a nickel in their pockets :)

I suppose you have a point lol!

Automatic for the people!

I really appreciate you sharing this! I'm on the lookout for real silverware to accompany my food posts. If you'd ever consider selling a piece, I'd definitely be interested!

If you want to PM me your address in discord I will send you a spoon, I have lots of them. I will have to check and see how many I have if you want a fork, and I know I hardly have any knives.

that is so nice of you , thanks so much! I will do that now and can send you SBD for shipping and your troubles, gladly. Owe ya one!

No worries, enjoy! :)

Love it...and another fine effort!! AND, your support is very appreciated!

Thank you, and likewise!
