The gospel relates that Jesus preached the Kingdom of Heaven, not only to the children of Abraham according to the flesh but also to the pagans and Gentiles. That is why Jesus not only preached in the regions of Galilee and Judea but also visited places like Gerasa, near the sea of Galilee, where pagan people lived.
And it was in the region of Gerasa where the gospel of Mark relates that Lord Jesus, to demonstrate the power and the mercy of the kingdom, performed a very notable exorcism on a person possessed by impure spirits.
This is how the gospel described this possessed person:
"This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones" Mark 5:3-5.
But Jesus went out to meet this person and before healing him, Jesus asked the unclean spirit what his name was, and the answer was Legion because there were many. And so it was that Jesus freed the man and sent the impure spirits to a herd of pigs, which threw themselves off a cliff and drowned.
And the gospel ends the story by relating that this healed man wanted to follow Jesus, but the Lord did not accept him as a disciple, and so he sent him to his people to bear witness to the good news, of the kingdom of God proclaimed to the hopeless and oppressed:
"As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, ´Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.´ So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed" Mark 5:18-20.
