The United States Government is totally shutdown. Closed for business. Been that way for weeks. Perhaps you heard. And a lot of government workers are not getting paid, many of them in the Coast Guard. So you know what the Coast Guard did to help them? Published this four-page document called Managing Your Finances During a Furlough. It's an awesome document. I read it. It's designed to help active duty Coast Guard members get through the furlough and even earn extra money while they're out of work. You know what happened? People hated it. So many people went online and trolled the Coast Guard for the helpful tips they gave their members to make extra money while they were furloughed. So they took it down. They were getting so much hate for trying to help people who needed it that that had to take the thing off the internet. What is this world coming to? I read these things too, and I gotta be honest with you, they had some pretty solid advice. Step Four: supplement your income.
Have a garage sale. Clean out your attic, basement and closets at the same time. Sell unwanted larger ticket items through the newspaper or online. That's a fantastic idea. In fact, it's such a great idea that this weekend my wife and I did the exact same thing. We found a bunch of things we weren't using any more, took pictures, put them on Facebook Marketplace, and in just two days we made $400 cash. Thanks, Coast Guard! Item Two: offer to watch children, walk pets or house sit. Now this is also a fantastic idea. Personally, nobody I know would trust me with any of those things. However, if you're furloughed, if you're not going to work, if you're sitting around your house for weeks on end, why not sit around someone else's house, eat their food, watch their cable, and get paid for it? I think that's fantastic. But my favorite was item number three: turn your hobby into an income. I mean, come on. That's literally the best advice you could give somebody.
Take your hobby and turn it into an income. That way, you love what you're doing and you're making money doing what you love. It's a win-win. And pretty soon, you won't have to work for the government any more. Which is a win-win-win. I know so many people who have taken what they love and turned it into a business, whether it's podcasting or selling makeup or opening an Etsy store. I know one guy who teaches people how to open their own hot dog cart business.
There's another guy, he loves to play basketball. He made six million dollars selling a course on how to increase your vertical jump. He makes a living teaching people how to jump higher. For years, my wife's hobby was taking my daughter to the store and buying her pink glittery things that smelled delicious. Well, she started her own subscription box business. And now every month, she sends out boxes full of pink glittery things that smell delicious to people all over the country. And she didn't even have to get furloughed.
