TIE AND DYE MAKING.

in fabrics •  7 years ago

Traditionally, tie - dye is a pattern of colour made by preventing the dye from reaching some areas of the materials while vat dyeing others. Folding, tying, stitching, crumpling or otherwise. Preparing the fabric inhibits the flow of the dye. The pattern of the folds, dying etc and where the dye touches dictates the resulting design.

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR TIE AND DYE.

  1. Container:- wipe plastic or rubber basins are most preferred because the chemicals in use will have harsh reaction with metal containers. The containers are used for soaking, washing and rinsing of cloth.

2.Mixing sticks:- This are needed for mixing the chemicals and also to stir the clothes in the dye bath.

  1. Rubber glove:- This are needed to protect the fingers from the corrosive nature of some of the chemicals used for preparing the dye.

  2. Heating system:- This is needed for boiling the water needed for dissolving the chemicals.

  3. Scissors:- used for cutting the fabrics and ropes.

  4. Tape rule:- used for measuring the cloth where necessary.

  5. Ropes:- strong ropes are needed for tying the clothes.

  6. Cloth:- this is the base of the kampala production guinea - brocade, jackad, or any cotton material.
don't try to silk, rubber or nylon material.

Chemical required for tie - dying

  1. Dye stuff:- this comes in different colours. this is the pigment in the dying mixture that forms the designs on the cloth. they are classified into primary and secondary colours.

  2. Caustic soda :- this is to loosen the cloth and rid it of the wax or starch which could hinder the cloth from absolving the dye solution for effective result.

  3. Hydrosulfide:- this is the most important chemicals needed in this production. Kampala cannot form without its presence in the dyeing mixture. If the hydrosulfide is not effective, the material may appear very beautiful, but the dye will wash away as soon as the material is dipped in water.

  4. Common salt:- this is the normal table salt. the use of it is optional. It helps to prevent the dye cloth from fading on time.

Chemicals required for dying 2yards and measurement.

  1. Dye stuff ( ë.g.green) 2 table spoons
  2. Caustic soda 2 table spoons
  3. Hydrosulfide 5 table spoons
  4. Salt (optional) 3 table spoons
  5. Starch enough

Procedure for preparing the dye bath
Step1. put the dye, caustic soda and hydrosulfide into the basin and then add a cup of boiling water.
while doing this, keep your face away from the dye bath, to prevent the foaming chemicals from coming in contact with your face.

Step2. add the salt and enough cold water for soaking the cloth to be dyed.

Preparation of cloth for dying
Step1. Carefully tie the cloth according to the desired pattern. objects such as stones pebbles, piece of wood, bottle tops could be place within the cloth before tieing.

Step2. Ensure that the cloth is firmily tied and knoted so that the dye does not penetrate into unwanted regions.

Dying the cloth
Step 1. Carefully deep the cloth into the dye bath stirring carefully with the mixing stick.

Step2. Allow the cloth to stay in the dye bath for about 30 to 45 minutes.

Step3. Wearing the rubber gloves, bring the cloth out of the dye bath and squeeze.

Step4. Rinse the cloth in cold water and then carefully loose.

step5. Have the starch prepared in a basin.

Step6. Deep the cloth into the starch mixture without squeezing spread to dry.

Step7. After drying, iron your Kampala is ready.
