Vacating Zuckerberg's labryth

So this happened yesterday:

I officially deactivated my Facebook account yesterday.

Doesn't seem like a big deal, and it shouldn't be, but when you've been attached to a time vampire like that for seven years it's not insignificant. Yes, seven years...

I didn't realize it had been that long. I started off deleting all of my pictures and planned on deleting all the posts I could, but it's not like every keystroke I've ever put up on Ole Zuck's world isn't out there sitting in storage somewhere.

So I just decided on the way to work. "You know what?" There is nothing I can think of that is, as a whole, a net positive gain by being on there.

Deactivated, done, the end.

I did encounter some interesting people I'd have most likely never met in person. Came across tons of useful information that has helped shape into where I am today. Reconnected me with "old friends," sort of.

At the end of the day it was like I was surrendering large portions of my day to following this, or commenting on that, debating with this one, or that one. All the while disconnected from people in my immediate vicinity, and not taking care of all sorts of other things that I normally would have had hours per week to accomplish.

So I feel fresher, more free, and like I have gained a small part of my life back. Sort of like when I quit smoking cigarettes about 18 years ago. Although this was infinitely easier.

Now the trick will be to not replace one time vampire with another. Which should be quite simple because there's a lot of life to live out there that doesn't involve an LED screen.

Selah.

what happens if in a thousand generations your super great grandchildren want to see the first person ever to post pictures video's etc. By then data will be so good they'll trace ancestors no problem.

I guess they'll figure it out. I mean they should be able to buy all that data from zookerberg the 10th to recover it. Digital ancestry .com style.
