Do you also have a Facebook account?

Hi steemians,

I'm just curious: do you also have a Facebook account?

Why I'm asking you might wonder.
Well, that's easy. I have a Facebook account but I rarely use it anymore. Perhaps once or twice a week I check what's going on there.
I'm mainly on steemit now not caring anymore what's happening on Facebook.

And since I do not log on there anymore I get messaged on my mobile phone - where I have the Facebook app installed - many times a day.

  • Did you see the new post of XYZ?
  • Did you see that the photo of AAA was liked 759 times in the group BBB you joined?
  • Did you see the new comment of CCC to the post of DDD?
  • We have new friendship recommendations for you.
  • etc., etc., etc

Normally, I received a message when someone I follow posted something. But I turned this off long ago.

My question is:

Do I get all these messages because I do not use Facebook anymore on regular bases or do users who still use Facebook regularly get also those kinds of messages several times a day?
I assume users who are still regularly on Facebook might know best if they also receive so many useless messages.

The best thing you should do is to remove the facebook app totally from your phone so that you are going to stop receiveing those unwanted messages

I would suggest getting rid of the facebook app completely. If you look at the permissions required to use the app, they are very invasive privacy wise. I just check mine occasionally through my browser. Since joining Steemit I barely check facebook once a day if that lol.

That's for sure the best @paradigm42. But did you notice a change of behavior at FB the moment you used it less?

No, not really. I have all forms of fb notifications turned off, and I have certain news sources set to show first on my feed, so I don't notice much difference when I do go on there.

I don't use it alot myself mostly because there are too many people in my profile with strong political belief and they shit all over the feed and I don't have enough patience to block them all.

Since I hardly use facebook anymore, I get between 5 and 10 mails daily about things that I miss ;). But something more interesting happened this week. I got mails that two friend requests from me were approved. Nothing special besides I made those requests years ago. And one person is kinda famous in Germany and has a page that you can subscribe to - to read what he posts. I was interested in the stuff he wrote about veganism and that's why I pushed the button for friend request. Later I learned that there is no need for "friendship"to read his stuff. So now I wonder how this happened now. They must have got a message from facebook to answer my request or someting like that - I find it very odd. Seems like facebook is trying to pull you back on their page with all tricks and manipulation....let's see what happens next when I don't show up ;))

WOW - that's indeed odd and also very interesting at the same time @psionic-tremors!
Please keep us updated!

You are right. As there is no activity happening from your side on Facebook, they are sending out updates to get you back on the platform. You can definitely go into the notification settings and configure to stop such notifications.
But, Facebook keeps track of our usage patterns and when they see the usage has decreased, they run such algorithms to send notifications which might generate interest back in the users.

Exactly my thoughts @rjoshicool!
Thanks for sharing!

That is a very good question. I have 2 accounts, one was dead, because I didn't take care of it, the other one I am still using regularly. I got the clear comparision if you might be curious:

  1. Dead one: Tens of thousands of trashy message, automatically add to way too many different nonsense groups.
  2. Alive one: Nothing, clean and neat. Not even one. Or Am I the only one lucky?

That's exactly what I also see happening @adam.tran.
Before when I used Facebook regularly I received standard messages which were actually helpful.
Now that I almost do not visit Facebook anymore I get spammed by Facebook to come and see ...

Hello! Well, I also have a Facebook account. which I do not use much either, but I do not receive those notifications, only when it comes to groups! but to those networks, the majority of the movement moves to brag. I see that there are nonsense publications, but they are like the way some people pretend to be what they really are not.

Have you earlier been active with your FB account?
The big question for me is: if you have been active and stop or reduce being active: does FB recognize this and bomb you with messages to come back?

Well the truth is not, although I do not use it constantly, I do not receive the notifications that you do receive. Will it be part of the configuration?

I must change the configuration for sure!

Haha it is pretty much the same with me! I rarely use Facebook anymore. Literally the only times I use Facebook is to connect with other students from university since we have a pretty huge and well supported facebook group.

I do not have the app installed on my phone but I do get the same messages you get via email on my phone.

I really think this is just a tactic used by facebook to maybe get you back engaging more on facebook.

Thanks for confirming the same experience @elleok!

I'm not much on FB either. Not because of Steemit, but now that I am on Steemit, it will be even less.
I don't receive messages from FB. But I don't have a FB-app. I use my laptop. So I guess there's the difference.

I think I will at least remove the app on my phone - I don't use it, it spams, needs a lot of memory and drains my battery.

I only use it on the computer. If it takes so much memory..... Bye Bye FB ;-)

first of all is not that you feel the comments or publications that come from the social network do not serve or are useless as you say the vast majority of people waste time doing things that do not make sense the first thing is to be on the facebook much longer than what is due, social networks take a lot of time but it is depending on the use that one of each page has its benefit that is why I dedicate myself to this platform called steemit that gives me a better benefit while more time I dedicate more is my rewards already that I learn more interesting things through other users united to this great platform.

Te doy la razón amigo @pundito, porque hay personas que le dedican parte de su tiempo a paginas que no tienen interés, lo primero es estar en Facebook mucho más tiempo de lo debido solo por ver un chisme una foto etc., etc.

@pundito has set 0.500 SBD bounty on this post! logo_for-light-bg_1000.png
What is a bounty exactly?

A bounty is money sent to a post to be distributed to the users commenting on it. It provides a way to reward users directly and works in addition to the steem/sbd they receive from the blockchain. It works independently of SteemPower.

You create a bounty by sending any amount of sbd/steem to @steem-bounty together with a post-url in the memo.

How can I earn a bounty Users are then competing for the bounty by writing their answers to the post in comments that will achieve upvotes from the community and especially the bounty creator. The money of the bounty gets distributed to all top level comments of the post at the same time when the post is paid out (7 Days after it was written). How much everyone gets depends on the votes the comments received. The sender of the bounties votes are weighted higher so that she decideds where 80% of the bounty money goes and all other votes determine the rest.

@steem-bounty does all of this for you automatically. You can use this service to automatically pay out a challenge, ask a hard question or simply to reward the people that interact with you.

Read more about how it works, even in different languages here.
