Facebook is reportedly planning to officially launch its Oculus Go standalone virtual reality (VR) headset at the company's F8 developer conference on May 1st this year, according to reports from multiple sources familiar with the company’s plans and those speaking toVariety. It was in 2018 that Facebook-own Oculus unveiled the $199 headset for the first time.
This Oculus Go standalone’s is built as a standalone headset with a purchase price range somewhere in-between $129 Gear VR and the $399 Rift, with no inside-out tracking or motion controllers that are completed tracked. Which company is charged with building the Oculus Go? It will be Xiaomi, and inside it, there is a Snapdragon 821 processor.
Following reports from Variety, the public has not yet understood why Facebook has scheduled to launch the Oculus Go come May 1st.Supply shortages are among the rumors or perhaps facebook’s is simply planning to use its f8 developer conference as an opportunity to announce one of its huge hardware developments of the year. Andrew Beswort, Facebook's VP of AR and VR in a tweet confirmed that the company's F8 conference would feature: "the biggest AR/VR news from Facebook to date."
Facebook has refused to comment on the rumors. According to leaks, the Oculus Go, which operates on the same OS as Samsung's Gear VR headset, and will contain a 32GB storage space onboard. Also, a much costly 64GB is expected to follow later on.
Further, at the moment there is another sophisticated headset Oculus is developing codenamed Santa Cruz, and it is a standalone prototype with tracking. Recently, HTC unveiled its Vive Pro, and its version is of a higher-resolution and the original Vive headset, furnished with built-in headphones and wireless adapter support. Besides, an all-in-one VR headset, the Vive Focus has also been unveiled by HTC. However HTC is yet to announce when exactly it will be available for consumers. It is highly likely that it will be the first ever standalone six-degrees-of-freedom VR headset displayed on sale.
Built with software that is the same as that of Samsung’s Gear VR headset, Oculus Go straight away enables direct access to thousands of VR games and 360-degree video experiences, and also comes with apps from Hulu, Netflix, and HBO. It differs from Gear VR. This is by way of integrating a display and directs all the computing power right into the headset. This automatically eliminates the need to use a phone or PC for VR.
From last year’s reports, developers received some versions of this Go, and they looked pretty much like complete and final retail products. It announced its partnership in manufacturing the Go with Xiaomi and Qualcomm but so far the device has since remained a no-show development looking to hit the market.
With concerns about supply shortages, this isn’t the first time Facebook’s Oculus unit has had issues especially with shipping delays. Its f8 launch could have even been scheduled in May, just to give more time to strategy. For instance, it's 2016 delay to deliver the first batch of Oculus Rift due to a component shortage forcing developers to wait until year-end to release games and application using Oculus Touch controller.
Since designing the standalone, a phone or PC for VR games, movies, apps and more is no longer needed in Oculus Go. Positional tracking does not feature in Oculus Go compared to the pricier Rift
