The gift of faith implies a spiritual growth that bears fruit, we live the faith because we grow with it, faith, if it is united to constancy and firmness (fear of God), is progressive towards that love (Agape) united to the gift of eternal life (contemplative activity), that is why we must keep it zealously. And this is what the apostle John teaches us in his second epistle: "Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully" 2 John 1:8.
Not to lose the fruits, that is, the purpose of our work, tells us the apostle, and that is very important, and here clearly the apostle is referring to the fruits of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-23); because many are the false teachers and the enemies of the faith, the apostle John warns us with determination in his epistle: "I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world" 2 John 1:7. The flesh and the spirit are in constant opposition, fighting each other, in an intense spiritual war, both inside us and outside of us, what sin first does, when it is conceived in the mind, is distance us from a life full of mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness).
And a demonstration of this truth was Simon Magus, a sorcerer who pretended to be a convert of the christian faith, and who was finally expelled from among the disciples and the church, because his intentions were not honest or pleasing to God:
"When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the Apostles' hands, he offered them money and said, ´Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.´
Peter answered: ´May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God´" Acts 8:18-21.
