The surprise hit of the summer is one of the least serious PS4 games ever and that’s all part of the fun in this free new multiplayer game.

Reviewing a free game sometimes feels like critiquing a birthday present from a loved one, who was trying to get you something you liked but didn’t quite get it right. But while Fall Guys has been an instant hit, thanks to being free on PlayStation Plus, that will only last until the end of August, after which you’ll be expected to pay for it. At which point the question changes from is Fall Guys worth playing to is it worth paying for?

Fall Guys is not a complicated concept to get your head around and that is a large part of its appeal. It’s inspired by TV shows like Takeshi’s Castle, Wipeout, and It’s a Knockout, as well as video games including Mario Party and the concept of battle royale. It’s the TV influence that is the most significant though, with the game even going as far as to describe each match as a ‘show’, as 60 players compete in a variety of obstacle courses and other simple mini-games.

At the end of each round a certain number of players are eliminated until only one is, literally, crowned the winner. The only vital controls other than moving are to jump, which means that anyone that can wield a gamepad can play and have a reasonable chance of doing well. It’s the sort of cheerful, low stakes/high fun action that, in recent years, has become almost the sole preserve of Nintendo and it’s no surprise to find it’s been a hit in these difficult times – even though it’s not a particularly well made video game.
