L.A. River walk

in family •  7 years ago

I have watched the last few years as the native habitat has come back to the Los Angeles River. Old timers like my wifes grandfather told her stories of catching crawfish in the river as a child growing up in Hollywood. This used to be a legit waterway and the reason Los Angeles is located where it is. The last known native steelhead trout was taken out of the river in 1940*.

The kids and I headed out from Los Feliz golf course, a 9 hole par-3 that I would bet you have seen on television and at the movies and never known it. This section of the river is located along the 5 interstate accross from Grifith Park..IMG_20180103_135647.jpg

These trees are well established and very tall. The overall transformation was incredable, growing up the river was nothing more than 3.5 million barrels of concrete spillway that required constant dredging. Now the birds were huge and healthy looking and the river is home to over 250 different bird species.* We even saw a large carp or catfish during an earlier walk!

Overall I was impressed by the ability of Mother Nature to recover in such urban conditions.

Pity that it got to such a sad state before it was given a chance. Great to hear that there are fish in the system, not so great to hear it is carp not steelhead trout.

Gotta start somewhere, thanks for checking it out.

Nice pictures @blackvapor. Makes me feel like going out for a hike now.

Thanks, it was fun.

Panama hasn't got to the stage of recovery yet, but the word is spreading about nasty pesticides, gmo's and being better stewards of the land and water. fortunatly most fence lines are living fence posts and there has always been a small buffer around any river or creek. But grazing land has value and treed land none.
Cheers

I need to come see Panama. Everyone I know who has been loved it.

I remember playing (poorly) golf at that course. good times hacking with dad! The area looks amazing. Goes to show how much beauty can be nearby and how many people pass by without taking the time to stop and enjoy it. Great pics!

Good times.
