Homemade Remedies: Elderberry syrup

in family •  7 years ago

We have used up our stash of elderberry syrup so I'm making some more this morning.
Last year we grew an abundance of elderberries so we decided to use a steam juicer and can some juice for a quick shortcut to making syrup this winter

Here is the recipe I use from Wellnessmama.com 1518016616228-711989096.jpg

I add the ingredients to the juice and boil it for about 10 min and then strain it off

Then wait for it to cool a bit so the heat doesn't kill the raw honey

I'm making a little batch for my 10 month old substituting maple syrup for honey since he can't have raw honey and he's coughing alot

I'll give them about a tsp several times a day while they're sick. 1518022511287-88405557.jpg

These old recipes for homemade cough syrups work the best. My grandma used to make this for us when we were young...

Yes! This does work so well!
Some friends made us a batch just a few weeks ago.. so glad, too!
Hope your little guy is feeling better soon 💙

Had some last night! I need to grow my own elderberries though!

I’m hoping to start growing, propagating, and selling elderberries soon!

Come on up, they are starting to get small leaves and within a month we will shoots coming up all around the plants. We have 5 different varieties on the homestead!

Awesome! We’re planning to get some bushes this year in preparation of this someday, too. :) I’d be interested in seeing/reading about your steam juicer too!

I have only just recently discovered the wonders of the elderberry, so I find your post very timely. Unfortunately, I discovered it only after a full round of this terrible flu that has been going around. Pity, because from what I can see it probably would have helped. However, I am taking it daily now, and it does give me an overall feeling of wellness. Or, at least I would like to think so. Thanks for this, and I do plan to make some...

It has been a bad year for the flu, glad to hear you found something you enjoy and it makes you feel better!

Thanks for the good info. We have 2 young elderberry plants so waiting for them to fruit.

It doesn't take long and you will be putting them away! You will need to watch the plants when young the birds can strip them clean in a couple of days. When they get older they produce more so the birds can't get them all.

Thanks. We've only been on our block for 12 months so have heaps of plants we are waiting to mature.

I make elderberry and also elderberry and sour cherry gummies for flu season.

I never thought of sour cherry in the gummies, I bet everyone enjoys them plus they are good for you. Thanks for sharing!

Sour cherry is good also for coughs. That's why older cough medicines were always cherry flavored. It also aids in sleep. I make a elderberry and sour cherry syrup that reduces coughs and helps me sleep and of course increases my immunity.
