Here is my entry for the Fantastic Fiction Contest #1--The Dog Walker

The early evening sky was a pleasant purple and blue, until the bright yellow falling star lit up up the sky like noon on a summer day.  My Brown Labrador, Mosley, barked at the object that streaked across the sky.  Then as suddenly as it appeared, it disappeared and the sky went back to it’s purple and blue.  The neighborhood dogs continued to bark.  You could hear dogs that were out on their walks with their owners and those that were still inside.  They were all barking.  Mosley kept walking.

“What was that?” Mr. Brown asked me as he was getting off of his riding lawn mower.

“I have no idea,” I responded.

Mrs. Roman walked out onto her front porch in her bathrobe with curlers in her hair, “Was that an airplane that just flew over?”

“No ma’am.  I don’t think so, I believe it must have been a meteor,” I replied.

“Uh, okay.  It was really bright,” she said.  “I’m going to go back inside.”  And she turned around, opened her screen door and went back inside her house.  The screen door slamming as she went.

Mosley and I turned and a kept walking to our house, which was only a few doors away.  Our house was the one with the Virginia Tech flag on the mailbox.

“Did you see that big bright light!” shouted my 10-year-old neighbor Corey, as he sat on his black Schwinn bike.

“I did.  I think the whole neighborhood saw it. What do you think it was?”

“A spaceship,” he replied matter-of-factly.

I smiled.  “Don’t they just float about or come and shoot at us?”

“Whatever,” he waved his hand at me, and he took off down the street on his bike.

Mosley and I walked into our driveway.   Corey’s mom, Bernadette but we called her Bernie, walked out onto her front porch.  “I called the police about the light.”  Her German shepherd, Astro, who was standing behind the screen door, was barking up a storm.

I tilted my head, “Why would you do that?  I just think it was meteor.  And it doesn’t seem be anything around here has been hit.”  I pointed to her dog,”But Astro is mad about it.”

“A lot of dogs up and down the street barked at it.  Mosely doesn’t seemed to be bothered by it.” She pointed at my dog.

“Oh, he barked when it happened,” I patted Mosely on his head.

“He’s such a good dog,” said Bernie.

Two police cars zoomed down the street, sirens blaring.  Sounds of other police sirens echoed in the distance.

I patted Mosley on the neck, “Come on, boy let’s go inside and get some food.”

I turn on the TV as I get Mosley’s food for him.  The local news was on.  The was Breaking Alert was stretched across the bottom of the screen.  “Authorities are still unsure what the bright light was.  But residents are being asked to stay inside their homes.”

“Waa?” I reply to the TV, and I drop Mosley’s bowl on the floor.  A helicopter flew over the house.  The whole house vibrated and shook.  I held onto the sink.

I run to the living room and switch channels to the national news.  Breaking News is flashing across the bottom of the screen.  The attractive announcer is in the middle of her talk, “Air force officials are not commenting on reports of increased flight from the bases in Virginia Beach.  But there are numerous reports of increased air traffic from the bases.”

“Frank, I’m going to need you to take my leash and collar off,” came a voice from the kitchen.  I screamed and turned around.  No one was there just Mosley, walked towards me with his leash still attached.  He sat down in front of me.  He spoke, “Frank, I don’t know how to tell you this.  But that flash of light in the sky was for me.  I am in charge of those on that ship.  The other dogs know that we are coming to take over.  I’ll leave a report that you treated me well, and took very good care of me.  But I am going to need you to take the leash off, or it won’t be good for you. Frank, I want it to be good for you.  Take my leash off.”
