Farmer's Market Challenge, Hollywood Farmer's Market

Farmer’s Market Challenge post #3

Hollywood Farmer’s Market, Portland Oregon

Early this morning it was evident that the week of cloudy weather was giving way to some much needed sunshine. I headed out to one of my favorite farmer’s markets with Lucy in tow. If you’ve seen my 2 previous market posts, you’ll know that not only does most of my food come from farmer’s markets year round, but also that I absolutely love the market experience.

Portland has many markets and some are huge and sprawling. The largest are the Beaverton Saturday Market in the suburbs and the Portland Farmer’s Market which is downtown and a main attraction for visitors and residents alike on a Saturday morning. Hollywood is a relatively small one but has great vendors and is well attended.

My priority is to buy foods that are free of genetically modified organisms and gyphosates (herbicide) is key and this dictates which growers I buy from and therefore which markets I attend. These dangerous seeds, farming practices, herbicides and altered genetics have infiltrated some part of the growing cycle for the majority of farms in this country and in fact it takes extraordinary effort for farmers to truly stay USDA organic. The best insurance - but still not perfect - are the products verified by the NonGMO Project, Oregon Tilth and/or the USDA Organic green label. Anything else is suspect.

best goat cheese I've ever tasted!

I’m admittedly pretty hardcore about this, but I know too much and have seen too much not to take it seriously. And the good news is that many of the vendors at farmer’s markets care just as much about this as the most fanatical among us.

The Hollywood neighborhood is an old and charming area and the farmer’s market is always a happening hub of music, knife sharpening, farmers, and shoppers who love the experience. This market in particular boasts amazing prepared food so I usually plan to eat something while there.

One of my all time favorite farmer’s raises yak, buffalo, elk! They also offer a “paleo mix” of ground meat from each kind of animal which includes 15% organ meat. Very healthy but it takes a little getting used to the gamey taste.

Today the musicians even had a dancer!

I hope you’ve enjoyed my farmer’s market posts, I know I’ve loved having a reason to photograph and write about each as well as to learn about other markets of the world from your posts. Thanks again @ericvancewalton and @fairytalelife for the challenge!

Have a beautiful weekend!

Organic produce. Free range exotic meats. Beautiful backdrop to enjoy as you peruse all this goodness. Mouth watering post.

so glad to hear it, thanks very much!!

Wow! Those Carrots look great! Nothing beats Fresh Organic Produce. With that being said, it's still hard to convince other people that! Upvoted and Followed! Thanks for sharing.

thanks @michael14876! It's hard to change anyone's opinion isn't it about anything?! The best we can do is live by example and hope that people often come around in their own time and their own way . thanks for reading, upvoting and following!

ohhh my gooooood that bread stand!! 😍

:-)) I couldn't resist it....I got a few things today

Wow very big market and they have organic food that's great.

Yes, although there is non organic too, there are very good and organic choices. Thanks for supporting my post!

Really liked the Tabor bread stall! Nice pics overall.

Thank you! that's quite a handle - @siddartha!!

Great pictures! Boy oh boy could I eat some goat cheese right now!

yes me too....it's better than I could have imagined and especially in the spring since the goats have been eating all of the new grass growth!

Sounds so good and healthy.

Yes I agree...I usually get home and make a meal because I'm so inspired by all of the good and healthy food!

Such nice carrots! I wonder how many different markets Portland has. I guess we will find out with your posts! It's good to see markets that require people to be the growers or the makers. I get skeptical about some markets when fruit, especially, shows up out of season. Folks in the Northwest are fortunate to have so many good choices. Happy shopping!

I have enjoyed reading these posts, and love the photos; the colours in the first photo in this post are so vibrant and the vegetables just look so wholesome and good.

Thanks again my friend

so glad you enjoyed them, I felt like 3 was maybe overdoing it but just couldn't help myself since I'm kind of a professional farmer's market attendee ;-)

Not overdoing it at all! You know, one of the best things about living here on the island is that almost all the fruit and veg is locally grown and pretty much pesticide and GMO free. Though I'm inclined to believe that the pesticide part is more to do with shortages than any moral virtues.

Wow... That market looks fantastic @natureofbeing! :D I am a big fan of lokal and organic products as well, so happy to see more and more of the good stuffs being accessible and sought out. <3

Great photos @natureofbeing ! Makes me wanna eat those carrots (had some today actually:) . Never suspected that the Hollywood in Portland is that nice.

Glad you enjoyed @jankasparec! Hollywood neighborhood here is kind of retro and charming and hasn't been completely gentrified yet wasn't ever really that rundown so I kind of like it. thanks for reading, upvoting and commenting!
