It is a secretion produced by land snails that fulfill vital functions for them as the processes of repair and regeneration, and that after careful studies was able to determine that it possessed the same properties on human skin. However, as we will see, knowledge about its properties is not so recent. There are studies that indicate that snail slime helps moisturize and improve the appearance of the skin with signs of photoaging.

Baba de Caracol has a double function. On the one hand, it stimulates the formation of collagen, elastin and the dermal component that repair the signs of photoaging and, on the other hand, minimizes the damage caused by the premature aging of the skin.

The Snail Slime

It has always been known not only the nutritional properties of its meat but also the healing properties of the Snail Slime (Helix aspersa). In the hatcheries it was observed that the snails quickly heal the small cuts and wounds that people produced in the handling of these animals.

Baba de Caracol has healing properties in it since it is produced to heal its tissues and repair its shell when it breaks. Although this was an aspect that already knew in ancient Rome and Greece, where the figure of the snail was the symbol of pharmacies, so to speak, of those times, for their medicinal properties.

The snails move like worms alternating contractions and elongations of their bodies, with a proverbial slowness. They produce mucus to help in locomotion reducing friction, this mucus contributes to its thermal regulation, it also reduces the risk of the snail before wounds, external aggressions (bacterial and fungal) helping them to stay away from potentially dangerous insects such as ants.

When it retracts into its shell, it secretes a special type of mucus that polymerizes to cover the entrance of its shell with a structure called a operculum.

Composition of Snail Slime

The Snail Slime contains:

Allantoin, it has been proven that allantoin (chemically glyoxyl-diurea) is a stimulant of epithelialization of the skin by stimulation of cell proliferation. Helps eliminate necrotic, non-viable tissues, replacing them with new tissues. Another of its actions is to act as an anti-irritant, protecting the skin from the action of acidic or alkaline substances, soaps or oils. The Food and Drug Administration, the demanding American drug testing agency, tests the use of allantoin in various indications for maintaining the good condition of the skin.

Proteins and vitamins, which the snail obtains through its plant nutrition. Proteins contribute to the good trophic state of the skin, but vitamins have, in addition, anti-inflammatory properties, which in this case potentiates the action of natural antibiotics contained in the same substrate.

Natural antibiotics Contents also in the snail slime, are substances capable of acting against bacteria usually present on the skin, especially Eschericia Coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Propionibacterium acnes (bacteria causing acne), protecting from infection.

Collagen and elastin. These two important components of the skin are also found in snail slime.

Glycolic Acid. One of the great novelties of cosmetics has been the introduction of hydroxy acids, which applied to the skin and depending on their concentration, can produce from a slight peeling to an intense peeling. One of the most used at present is glycolic acid, which is also present in the snail slime at a concentration capable of producing a smooth removal of the most superficial layers of dead cells, and promoting their replacement by recent cells, formed under the stimulus of allantoin.

Glycolic acid, by the elimination of superficial layers of the skin, also improves the situation of the hair follicles, favoring the passage through them of the substances applied on the surface.

Cetostearyl alcohol, concentrated protein extract of snail slime, liquid petrolatum, glycyl alcohol, oleic acid decyl ester, silicone, isopropyl myristate, propylene glycol, perfume, allantoin, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, deionized water.
