Food is needed in greater quantities and efforts for its production needs to be doubled. This is because its production does move on the same proportion with increase in population as once stated by Rev. Thomas Malthus.
However, as food is been produced, the environment also has to be sustainable in its management. This can be achieved through the following ways.
The youths needs to be actively engaged in this venture as the majority of farmers especially in the developing countries are mostly the ageing population, who can not mostly work for longer hours. As such youths have to move from the orientations of white collar jobs to avenues where they can become entrepreneurs.
For increase yields to be efficient, farmers need to embrace agricultural innovations such as using improved crop varieties, agronomic practices, timely weeding and harvesting, use of fertilizers or manure etc. As such if majority of of the countries the world over can effectively invest in agriculture, then the issue of either food shortages or famine will gradually be over as there are a majority of countries that are net importers of food.
Good markets should also be set up, this because the prices of agricultural products especially in developing countries are really discouraging reason why young people shy away from the venture always.
Also governments could always adopt favourable policies that will encourage several people into the venture such as low taxes, availability of loans, ready market etc.
Also the traditional burning of farmland, should be stopped as it only exposes the soil to either wind or water erosion respectively. In this way, the top soil will be easily carried away during cultivation periods. Therefore, young people should take up the challenge to invest in this venture as it is rewarding as well contributing in feeding the world.
