Urban Farming is the practice of cultivating, processing, and distributing food in or around a village, town, or city.[1] Urban agriculture can also involve animal husbandry, aquaculture, agroforestry, urban beekeeping, and horticulture.
Does it really make any sense to have food produced in one part of the country and have it shipped to another part? When it could be produced within the cities and communities.
Most of our food is produced with big corporate farms . Our current ” food system” has our food our food produced thousands of miles away from population centers. This requires the food to shipped in large trucks which require oil which increase the cost of the food. Other problems with the system is things like natural disaster or a terrorist attack .
Urban agriculture or Urban Farming has many benefits . It would benefit both the environment and the strength and security of our economy. When it comes to the environment most people think of ‘Climate Change” . As a mentioned early our current food system requires a lot of oil . What you rarely hear about oil is it’s becoming more and more expensive to produce. This is known as Peak oil . As oil becomes more costly so does food. Not only is oil used to in the shipping but also used in things like fertilizers .
Urban Farming would also benefit the community but giving opportunity to people in the cities for income also they would save them money when they grow their own food. Urban farming would solve the problem of ” food deserts”. In most big cities the nearest produce is 5 to 7 miles away. This creates an unhealthy community which is more of burden on the tax payer.
Urban Farming is an example of a sustainable economic system . How can we have an economic system that is based in a finite resource. A sustainable economy is green economy .
