Against the odds! My son 1-0 dyspraxia

in farther •  7 years ago

When my son was diagnosed with dyspraxia, gdd and hyper mobility we knew as parents things will be challenging but what ever comes our way we would give him the best support we can manage.
That was really highlted when on a recent caravan park holiday my son wanted to take up archery lessons. Everything about firing an arrow to hit a target goes against him and the problems he faces but I said NO he needs to give it a try at least.
So that day when it was time to go he was so excited saying “Dad, I’m going to hit the bullseye watch me” I smiled and replied “ I’m sure you will son” while thinking, I will be proud what ever he achieves.
Once their he listened carefully and at first the arrows weren’t even reaching the target but he laughed it of as a bit of fun. I just watched on with an encouraging smile.
Then bang a arrow hits the board, well I shouted “ WELL DONE SON”
Everyone looked as if to say he only hit the board but I didn’t care for my son he just made the podium at the Olympics and then something magical happen he turned into Robin Hood with every arrow hitting the board and not just the board but Bullseye. 42B47939-1964-479B-9241-D85BFEEB8DB8.jpeg
My son turned to me grinning like Cheshire Cat and said “see told I would get it”
Moral of the story never doubt the abilities of anyone. My son beat his demons that day and I learned a valuable lesson. So proud

Your Son, clearly already knows a very important bit of info...

...that many allegedly, intellectually sophisticated adults haven't even realised...

Societies labels, tage and diagnoses mean jack!

Yes, of course they will sometimes manifest in many ways as we are growing, sometimes they may cause distress because of not being able to easily do what others can, BUT...

In the big scheme of things, the second we decide...I mean REALLY decide we are gonna accomplish something and put our heart, soul and mental tenacity behind our intent...

That obstacle doesn't stand a chance!

Your story is actually a perfect metaphor because it not only included a mental target and bullseye, but an actual target and bullseye too.

Our kids sometimes teach us a damn site more about a situation than we could teach them in a year. His self satisfaction, and his Father's pride, will have felt like an olympic gold to him, I'm sure.
