KFC Double Down "sandwich": it's ridiculous and kinda "meh"

in fastfood •  6 years ago

When i saw this being advertised I thought I might be dreaming. Not because this is something I think the world has been waiting for or because I found it particularly inviting. I thought I might be asleep because I can't believe that a product like this is on the market at all. Of course I had to try it.

KFC: Hey you! You like sandwiches?

Me: Sure, I like sandwiches

KFC: How about if instead of bread we used two pieces of fried chicken as the delivery method? That do anything for ya?

Me: Sounds weird but you have my attention... what's in the middle?

KFC: Bacon

The actual product looks considerably different than the advertisement but that surprises no one. It was also really difficult to eat because it was a million degrees but i suppose that is better than getting it cold.

I was disappointed that it was considerably smaller than the adverts portray. I expected a monster but this is a snack for me at best.

The bad news is that it tips the scale at more than 500 calories but that doesn't phase me because since I ride a bicycle everywhere I am ok with that.

The good news is that if you are looking for more protein in your life, obviously something that has 2 pieces of chicken as "bread" you are gonna be getting a lot of that. This one has 52 grams of protein and if you remember my previous article about how I am searching to get around 130 grams of protein in my daily routine this gets me well along that path. It also has less than 20 grams of carbohydrates which is fantastic but not surprising since there is no bread involved.

The really bad news is that it has a full day's worth of sodium in it, but I don't really track that so whatever. I'll probably need to worry about that later in life. I'm a little curious where all the sodium comes from? Perhaps the sauce.

Overall, I would say that I am pretty unlikely to order this again because for a fast-food indulgence, it really wasn't ticking all the boxes as far as flavor is concerned.

I try and stay away from KFC and if I have to have chicken will try a Nandos instead. I am sure you must have a Nandos somewhere there. It doesn't make sense to me and would taste foreign without the bun. I have seen the other one where the lettuce becomes the bun as well which brings me back to what is the point. Have the bun and do some more exercise.

we actually do not have Nandos but I have heard of it. I never saw a Nandos when I was in the USA either although it almost certainly exists there. I think the flavor of the Double Down works beause in the end of the day it is just two really big chicken tenders with a piece of bacon. The cheese is unnecessary. If using a fork and what not this could actually be pretty decent.

The "sandwich" in the ad seems to be okay. Not great, but okay.
But the real thing (like in your photo) really doesn`t make me want to try this.

Btw: I hate having greasy fingers. Is it possible to eat this "sandwich" without getting greasy fingers?

i suppose you could use a knife and fork, and all KFC's in Thailand have metal cutlery and plates so you don't have to worry about being a planet destroyer :)

You had me at "KFC" 😂

Ad looks great, promising a true sammich,
real sandwich looks like they forgot to cook the middle part..lamish
I'll stay with the bucket of hot wings, thanks 😄

i do enjoy hot wings! It wasn't great, it wasn't terrible. But yeah, if im gonna eat at KFC there are plenty of other things to choose from that are better :)

We have that in NZ - i prefer the hot and spicy wings myself. I tried that double down though, a while back - yeah, it loses something without the bun :/ its like, you put something in a bun, its just taste better.

It's almost as though that is a bit part of the reason why sandwiches are so popular :P I'm not sure if we have the hot/spicy wings. We have something called "zabbs" which are breaded excessively in my opinion and the spice simply tastes like salt after you've had a few (which I am certain there is a lot of... it is KFC afterall)

Hahaha. For some reason you have me feeling surprisingly jealous! I was walking around here in Guayaquil Ecuador and came accross a KFC just yesterday, but certainly don't recall that being on the menu. Maybe the Ecuadorians are just not yet ready for it!

Great post, great share, and have a great day!

It looks great and would definitely try it but isn't too greasy? Bacon, cheese, fried in oil, isn't that too much?

it actually wasn't. Don't know how that is possible. IT was messy, but this was mostly because of the sauce in the middle.

Messy is not a problem as you can clean your hands. I'm glad it doesn't taste greasy, that would be terrible. I'm wondering it it's available worldwide in KFC's.

I really did not like him and I'm not enthusiastic about him

I personally love KFC's chicken bucket. That is delicious. and about this kfc sandwich I haven't tried it yet. and I won't even try it now :p
Keep rocking!

It's been around since 2010
The folks that eat them don't last much past that.
Looks like a heart stopper to me.
A delicious heartstopper.

I remember when this first came out. People were freaking out about it because of the fat content and all of that. I never got around to trying one myself. I am more of a original recipe fan. I always forget that places like these probably have locations in other countries...

I remember that the colonel's chicken came to my country ten years ago, when I went with my friends to the mall we went to collect all the chicken to buy the largest combo, the secret of that chicken is the best in the world, it is unique and unique, really a delight, well I will not try it anymore because in Vnezuela low quality, I imagine that because they do not get the necessary ingredients to do it perfectly, in fact I think the franchise is leaving the country. Greetings.
