You have probably heard that Fear of Flying is an irrational fear, and it is. It is also known as Aerophobia, which is a fear of flying. The scientific term for fear of flying is called aerophobia, and this is an imaginary fear that is very common. In my own case, I was afraid of flying since I was a child. As an adult, this condition developed into a full blown phobia, so I sought help from various sources to find treatment.
First, I tried psychotherapy. I had done many self-help programs in the past, and could not find relief with any of them. I felt like I had wasted money on these "so-called" specialists who were more interested in keeping me quiet than curing me. I finally tried acupuncture, and again, could not find relief. I was getting sick more often during the time I was at the chiropractic office than while I was at home.
Finally I decided to give one of my flying episodes some thought, and started reading about it. After reading numerous books and articles on the subject, I realized that what I was actually afraid of was not flying per se, but the impact that it would have on me if I did become airborne. That is what I was really afraid of! This became the impetus for my Fear of Flying treatment.
My treatment began with EFT, or Emotional Freedom Techniques. EFT is an ancient art based on the idea that we all emit energy. When you are distressed, angry, or sad, this energy is sometimes blocked. If you try to release this energy through the pores of your skin, you can actually make yourself sick. Through EFT, you can unblock this energy, allowing it to flow uninterrupted.
During the first few weeks of treatment, I experienced an abundance of feelings of peace, joy, and happiness. I did not immediately become aware that I was no longer afraid of flying. But as I practiced the techniques, I saw how easy it was to let go of my anxiety, anger, or sadness and to instead allow these feelings to flow through me without judgment. I felt a tremendous sense of relief, as if a weight was lifted off my shoulders.
At the end of the six month treatment, I felt that I had changed. Like I said before, there are many factors that can contribute to this condition. However, as soon as I began EFT, I noticed that I was happier, healthier, and more at peace with myself. The change was immediate. I recommend that anyone who is afraid of flying to give EFT a try.
