Fear is a common part of human psychology, despite people having different fears. For some it's spiders, snakes, closed spaces, darkness, or any number of things.
Fear and anxiety are closely related in our brain. Many people have anxiety issues or even disorders like panic attacks or PTSD, and they get prescribed anti-anxiety psychiatric drugs to deal with the psychological turmoil. Apparently, 17% or one out of six Americans is on a psychiatric drug. But the effectiveness of a drug varies from person to person. Fear and anxiety aren't so easy to 'pin down' and study.
To understand fear and anxiety better, a recent study conducted research on the nematode worm to analyze the responses the worm has when exposed to chemicals coming from it's natural predator. The team of researchers uncovered the underlying molecular pathways that produce fear-like response which parallels human anxiety. This can potentially allow more accurate drugs to be developed that will block the signals in the brain to alleviate fear and anxiety.
The worm Caenorhabditis elegans has 302 neurons, making it easier to look at and track responses compared to the vastly more complex human brain and neuronal network. Exposing C. elegans to the sulfolipid chemical from the predator worm P. pacificus caused C. elegans to quickly turn away from the place where the chemical was put. Mice react similarly when they are exposed to the scent of cat urine when no cat is actually present.
When C. elegans was soaked in a sulfolipid solution for 30 minutes, they stopped laying eggs even after being removed from the solution for over an hour. This is an indicator of acute stress and a response to long-term anxiety. Soaking the worms in a Zoloft anti-anxiety drug solution removed the fear and anxiety responses, suggesting that the same neural pathways have persisted throughout the evolution of animal species.
The study shows evidence of complex reactions that scientists previously assumed were only present in more advanced brains like those of mammals. Fear is a basic expression in the development of consciousness across animal species, and isn't only present in the more evolved species such as reptiles that is used for the terminology of the base-brain being called the R-Complex or reptilian brain and associated with fight-or-flight and fear responses.
Fear and anxiety are more ancient and ingrained in the evolutionary process than previously thought. Studying the genes, nerves and pathways related to fear and anxiety in the worm can lead to a better understanding of the same process in humans.
Additionally, this knowledge can be used to better protect food crops from certain types of worms. Instead of pesticides that are toxic for nematode species, other animal species and human animals, new chemicals might be developed that deter and repel the crop-damaging worms. This would optimize food production and human health by protecting the food and protecting our health as well.
Some fears might be biological and uncontrollable, but many are purely psychological to induce biological and physiological responses in our bodies. I induced an anxiety attack once by worrying about a potential detrimental health outcome, all through the power of consciousness. I just thought about something, saw a potential future outcome I didn't like, and feared it, which made my feel nauseous, giving me an upset stomach, feeling like I was going to vomit, giving me a fever, sweating and almost passing out. It's amazing how powerful the mind/consciousness is to induce physiological changes in our body when no threat or illness is present.
Do you suffer from anxiety or frequent fear of something? Have psychiatric drugs helped you? Have you been able to deal with fear or anxiety through conscious self-reflection to overcome these psychological states?

In my experience people try to use this rationale to elevate themselves above animals. A lot of opinions out there claim we experience higher emotions than other animals.
I think that's ridiculous. Emotions are base chemicals in the brain. We're not special. The only thing that separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom is our ability to communicate. If we couldn't talk to each other we'd be dumb as rocks.
We've invented technology to enhance our communication abilities. Writing, the printing press, and the Internet allow us to forge our way ahead.
I actually think a lot of people would be horrified if we learned how to talk to animals because we'd find out how intelligent they really are. Pigs, elephants, whales, dolphins, chimpanzees, etc. are much smarter than we think they are and we treat them like they are insects.

Our ability to communicate, which demonstrates the ability to think at higher levels. The demonstrability of higher level abstract thinking is more pronounced for human animals than other animals. They can abstract to a certain level/depth, but not compared to us. None of that excuses the treatment nor justifies the immorality to kill/murder innocent beings that did us no harm, just to we can eat them, when we don't necessarily need to.
Animals speak through emotional physiological responses and actions/behaviors. they don't want to be enslaved, or exploited, or murdered. Pigs are smarter than dogs. Elephants can be trained to paint. Veganism is the future of mankind because we can live without touching the animal kingdom, and stick to the plant kingdom for our sustenance and optimal health. Animal products are not optimally beneficial, plants are.
Thanks for the feedback :)

When I think about stuff like this I always recall an old Star Trek movie quote, "My compassion for animals is not limited to my estimate of their intelligence."
Hopefully in the near future lab-grown meat products will be cheaper, taste better, and be a healthier alternative in addition to more ethical.

Interesting research on anxiety. Yes I have suffered from depression and anxiety much of my life sad to say. I believe our diet and surroundings also contribute to it. I once took meds but not for a number of years. My experience is that the meds may dull or numb you but don't really deal with it. I am better today with the anxiety attacks but still deal with depression. Mornings are the hardest. But once I get going it gets much better. Today is good day. Thanks for the intriguing articles @krnel. Ps I think folks who are more creative or spiritual are larger targets for these issues.

Yes, I agree. For some reason. It may be the imaginative side that projects into the future negative outcomes, irrationally worrying about things that likely won't ever happen. Less projection into the future from fantasy imagination on negatives being 'real' and being more realistic can be less stressful with less anxiety produced. Have you engaged in self-analysis, introspection, contemplation, etc. to figure out the root of why this is happening to you?

i absolutely agree with you. Spiritual and empathetic people are easily susceptible to anxiety and depression alike.
Its good to know though that you are getting a hang on yourself.
I suffered from depression for a period and i can tell you its a bad place to be.

Fear saves our lives every single day! We lock our doors out of fear of being robbed, we save pensions out of fear of not living good lives at old age, we pray to gods out of fear of going to hell. Too much fear is bad, too little is even worse as you quickly die!

Fear is dual indeed, positives and negatives, healthy and unhealthy manifestations.

Everyone has suffered anxiety at some point in their life, but when it is too intense, it is necessary to have control over it, since the person suffering from it suffers greatly. This differentiates between pathological anxiety, which is the last case cited, and adaptive anxiety, which is what all people suffer in some episode of their life. This differentiates between pathological anxiety, which is the last case cited, and adaptive anxiety, which is what all people suffer in some episode of their lives.
The causes of anxiety depend largely on the characteristics of each person, but as a general normal, they are attributed to those aspects that create fear, stress and bewilderment. There are people who know how to control these emotions, however, in many cases and because it is an emotion, the person feels anguish and feel limited to try to deal with the problem.
@krnel says that when depression is very strong people tend to take psychiatric medications, and they are not looking for ways to overcome their anxiety themselves. The downside of psychiatric medications is that it is very addictive and then it is very difficult to leave ..

Yeah, drugs are only a relief for the symptoms, not the solution at the root causal level. Anxiety can make people feel unfit or unable to cope with finding a way out of that state. Drugs are an easy fix :/

I enjoyed reading your post, fear is the response to an immediate danger while anxiety is when we get the "what if" loop in our thoughts and we worry about what it may happen..sometimes fear "kills" more people than death

Thanks for the clarification. You can also have fear of open spaces, the fear of those spaces that causes panic and anxiety. Yet, there is no real danger, only a perceived or imagined danger, but there is still a fear.

You have written about a very important topics.I think most of the people are suffering from different kinds of psychological disorder.Fear and anxiety is connected with each other.I am also suffering from some kinds of psychological disorder.I lost my younger brother 19 years ago, since then i am suffering from a psychological disorder, about which no one knows.I never went to a psychiatrist. But i know about my problem.Whenever my family member goes out of the house it make me worries.I get a feelings that something will happened to them or they will be dead. You don't have any idea how scary the feelings is.Thank's for sharing this post.@upvoted

Thanks for the feedback. You can take time to delve into your fear, and analyze the root of why it is there in order to overcome it. Do some research online about overcoming loss and the worry of future outcomes that likely won't happen creating anxiety and fear. Worrying about things you can't control does not help you.

I find it very hard to describe this but when I was a kid, I used to be haunted by this nightmare. If you ask me what it is, it's quite silly and hard to explain at the same time. I used to dream of things turning thinner and long. Much like an open tap with the slightest flow.
I don't know why it used to be frightening to me.
