CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
The police car that Rupert was in approached the street, on which Rupert's house was. It turned the corner and went down the street. Rupert could see a couple of police cars parked by his gate; a few of them had flashing light bars. As they got closer to the house, he noticed snipers on the roof of his house.
"Sylvia must be terrified," he whispered and shook his head.
"What was that, sir," Scott, the FBI agent, asked him.
"It's nothing," Rupert said.
They went through the gate and parked quite close to the front door. A couple of agents walked to the car and talked with the occupants, while some went inside the house.
Inside the house, Sylvia was still seated by the couch, conversing with the young lady that had come earlier. FBI agents came in and talked to their leader, who then told Sylvia that Rupert had arrived.
Sylvia was relieved and a short burst of energy entered her, causing her to stand up and look at the door.
A few seconds later, the door opened and Rupert walked in. Sylvia smiled at him. Jane immediately ran to him when she saw him.
Rupert bent down and picked her up, and held her in his arms, as he usually did.
"Hello Jane," he said and kissed her forehead.
"Hello Daddy. I saw you on TV today," she said, excitedly.
"Really, Jane?"
"Yes."
Rupert kissed her forehead again and then walked to Sylvia. He put Jane down and hugged Sylvia, who just cried on his shoulder and clutched his back.
"It's okay, honey. Everything will be okay," Rupert said, stroking her hair and rubbing her back.
"It's okay. I'm here now."
As he hugged Sylvia, Rupert noticed a woman sitting on one of their couches. When their eyes met, the woman stood up and walked to the couple. Rupert gently broke the hug and turned to greet the woman.
"Hi," he said, in an inquisitive tone.
"Greetings, Mr. Blake," she said.
"Honey, this young lady has told me something of great importance," Sylvia said to Rupert.
"And what could that be?"
"Firstly, my name is Alicia Bills. I work; or rather, I worked as a personal assistant and receptionist for Jake Waters."
Rupert raised his eyebrows.
"I recently overheard Mr. Waters talking to someone in his office. They discussed something about a job that needed to be done. I didn't make much sense of it until I met the person that he was talking to again, on another day. It was at a party that Mr. Waters hosted at his house. The person is called Danny Rogers. At the party, they frequently spent a lot of time in Jake's private office, and I'm sure it was about the so-called job. Throughout the party though, I found Danny very familiar; as if I had seen him before, and not just at work."
Rupert listened, carefully.
"Well, the party ended and I went home. When I was in bed that night, I finally managed to remember where I had seen him before. He went out with a friend of mine, last month; her name is Kelly. She's the personal assistant of BuyNow's CEO. I met with her on Sunday and she told me something that made me suspicious of Danny's intentions. We were just chatting, with no specific topic in mind, just catching up and sharing news. She told me that she once caught Danny spying on her computer and reading her emails."
Rupert slowly nodded.
"I then saw Danny in a coffee shop, that Sunday; after my meeting with Kelly. He didn't notice me, so I decided to follow him. I followed him to this street. He parked his car a few houses away from here, and I parked mine further up the street and watched him. He stayed in his car for hours only to come out when you guys went out."
"That's when we went out for lunch," Rupert said.
"That's when I saw him enter your house through the back. I immediately drove away and went to a restaurant. While I was there, I searched the Internet for your address and I saw your names. I recognized your name from the news reports, about when you got promoted so I decided to inform the police."
Rupert was silent, and his face expressionless, and Alicia continued.
"The police came to our workplace this morning and arrested Mr. Waters. I then decided to come here and tell you what I know."
Rupert cleared his throat and said, "Thank you so much for your assistance, Alicia. I don't know how bad it would have all ended up if it wasn't for your brave action."
"Yes, you saved our lives, and probably the lives of many others too," Sylvia added.
"Thank you. It was my duty," she said.
"I'll be forever indebted to you. How can we repay—"
Rupert stopped talking as the agents' leader came into the lounge.
"There's no need to worry anymore. My agents have arrested the assassin, and he is in police custody right now."
"That's great," Sylvia said.
"How did they catch him? Where was he?" Rupert asked this curiously.
"Apparently, he wasn't aware of Jake's arrest yet. He went back to his apartment and bumped into my agents there."
"That's good news. I was worried about what he would do," Alicia said.
Sylvia hugged Rupert, who let out a sigh of relief.
This was just too close and too risky.
