Personally, I think they should have used the gold, blue and red 2-piece uniforms, at least on the USS Shenzhou to tie the series into the TOS era more. The USS Discovery can be a different beast as it's probably on a covert mission and wouldn't necessarily have to look like other Starfleet vessels (inside and out). There's more on this in this post.
I agree i would have like to see them have a connection to star trek tos. I think though i would have preferred something similar to the uniforms featured on the cage. As they are taking place 10 years before the original series. However, as they did go with a very similar look to jj abrams reboots. I would have wanted them to be closer to the events in that timeline. The problem is it greatly disturbs the continuity. I don't mind needed changes to keep up with our tech. This is too obvious though lol.
