Alex left the Econo Lodge with gravel kicking up behind the car as he accelerated out of the parking lot. He drove a sleek black Dodge Charger Pursuit all-wheel drive. It was the kind that the police drive, with the 5.7 Hemi engine and heavy-duty suspension. It was not frivolous on the outside but it could run.
He made a hard left turn from Underwood road onto Airport road and hit I-26 with the pedal to the floor.
"Finally", he thought "that hotel was getting small sitting there waiting"
It was late at night and the drivers that were still on 26 moved to the right lane and tapped their brakes when they saw the aggressive looking Dodge coming up behind them.
The black dodge headed through "Dysfunction Junction" skirted the edge of Asheville and merged onto I-40 toward Tennessee.
The 8 digits Alex had received were taking him to Newport, Tennessee. That's where the package was.
There is one tunnel that passes under Hurricane mountain on I-40. When Alex neared the tunnel he knew he was getting close to his destination.
Alex was well prepared and well armed. This wasn't his first rodeo. He figured this would be a fairly easy pickup and then he could get some much-needed rest. His assumption was halfway right.
