"I promise not to go back again. I have been clean for a month." His eyes pleaded.

She looked at the druggie of a husband grovelling at her door. He had hurt them enough.

She slammed the door on him.

Weeks later, she saw him at the joint, wasted away.

"He had hurt them enough"

Your choice of the word "them" instead of "her" added so much depth, alluding to his own self-destruction as well as the pain he caused her. Nice touch.

Interesting! My interpretation was that they have children. But I see now that your interpretation works just as well. Literature is, of course, always up to the interpretation so the readers!

As I found out when I heard a mom-friend share her interpretation of The Giving Tree.

This is very powerful, @wems. You captured the conflict well: the decision the character must make to turn her back on her self-destructing husband. It's clear she has given him many chances, and can no longer trust him to keep his word. Well done.
