The common sense in the Bible: Let us fight against anyone who comes to attack us on the sabbath day. 1 Maccabees 2:41

The First Book of Maccabees teaches with a simple story the importance of the gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity) and the common sense in the Bible.
The First Book of Maccabees begins its story by explaining the conquest of Alexander the Great and how the subsequent division of his Kingdom with his death filled the Middle East with calamities. And among Alexander's successors, who divided his empire, arose an impious man named Antiochus IV Epiphanes.
And this King decided to hellenize his entire Kingdom and to persecute the local customs of the countries he conquered, and because of this situation, the nation of Israel suffered greatly.
The first resistance according to the book began with Mattathias and his sons, who took the life of a royal official who was trying to impose apostasy in the city of Modin. When this happened, many Jews retreated to the desert, so a garrison that resided in the city of Jerusalem went out to pursue them.
As a result of this, the book relates that the Jews were attacked and did not defend themselves so as not to desecrate the Sabbath: "So they attacked them on the sabbath, and they died, with their wives and children and cattle, to the number of a thousand persons" 1 Maccabees 2:38.
This story is a demonstration that the law of Moses must always be interpreted with the common sense that the fear of God provides. An interpretation too strict of the law of Moses can, as in the case reported, have serious consequences. Morality and ethics in the Old Testament are summarized in the teaching: "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man", Ecclesiastes 12:13.
In fact, the priest Mattathias, who was a deep expert on the law, resolved with his friends something completely different, because according to the common sense, life is the most important: "Let us fight against anyone who comes to attack us on the sabbath day" 1 Maccabees 2:41.
