Capsule Film Review: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

Time travel, one of the most popular plot elements in the episodes of original Star Trek television series, is used in the fourth part of film series. Former crew of USS Enterprise (destroyed in The Search for Spock) must rescue Earth from the alien entity that wants to communicate with humpback whales, a species long-extinct. So, they travel back in time and come to 1986 San Francisco in order to find living specimens. The Voyage Home, directed by Leonard Nimoy, is in many ways reflection of its time; the plot is inspired by the growing strength of environmentalist movement, as well as the gradual de-escalation of Cold War (reflected in few scenes of USS Enterprise's Russian crew member Pavel Chekhov facing suspicious US Marines at its 1986 namesake). Most importantly, The Voyage Home returns to old, optimistic vision of Star Trek by renouncing violence and lacking villains, while compensating it with fish-out-water style of humour.
