MST3K: Do you even know what it is?

in film •  7 years ago  (edited)

I was a huge fan of this show when i was in college. I used to really irritate my roommates because i would program the VCR to record it every Saturday night at 1am and normally they were partying during this time.

Yeah, that's right, we had to use a VCR with a TAPE in it and wait for things to come on at a certain time of day.... it's hard to imagine...

The basic premise behind this show is pretty remarkable, and only because it actually worked despite being exceptionally dumb.

The jokers that came up with it must have been very surprised that they actually received funding.

Here is how it works: The actors have a fake frame set up in the front of a fake movie theater

and they watch terrible movies and say funny things while the movie is going on. That's all there is to it!

I mean literally, that is the only thing they did and millions of people tuned in to watch it - ok not at first but now there is still a cult following numbering in the thousands! maybe more!. they didn't have to make a film, they didn't have to write a script (well, i suppose they did but not for the film,) they didn't have to pay for anything involved with the film's creation. They only had to sit there and say funny things while the film played.

For lots of people (at least most of the people i met,) this was dumb. However, i was a nerd and I LOVED it.

They almost always reviewed / made fun of films that happened long before i was born and I have to imagine that they carefully selected the ones that either had very low royalties or I suspect ones that had no royalties at all. I don't know the specifics but they didn't get sued into oblivion so it must have been ok.

The show followed the host Joel, which changed to Mike later, and the two robot pals named "Crow" and "Tom Servo"...

Crow, Joel, and Tom Servo... completely ridiculous

Crow, Mike, and Tom Servo, the lineup i liked better

Let me show you the intro so you can have some idea about how the show works and then you can pretend to care in the comments.

extremely high budget production

I suppose I am not doing it much justice but I want you to keep in mind that this show became wildly popular (kinda) and even ended up having a film of their own in a theater that very few people went to go see (i was one of them.)

In the meantime I would like to share with you one of my personal favorites from the early years (right around the time i was pissing off my college roommates i would imagine.)

that's right jerks, i am bigger than you and you will not turn off the VCR under any circumstances

This series went on to do more than 10 seasons and at least in my mind and many other fans' minds it was really creative and fun. Combine this with the fact that it was later considered an honor to be selected for inclusion in MST3K and i think we have a thing that people will talk about ages from now. Or if not that long, maybe a few years.

I honestly don't expect any of you to enjoy this because well, it wasn't terribly popular 20 years ago when my college roommates were getting upset with me for monopolizing the VCR. However, if i can bring just one nerd around to the majesty of Mystery Science Theater 3000, then my job is done.

Sorry but were you in college like some 50years ago Cuz im not relating and no im not 15lol, (joking it says 20years at the end)?
Do i hear some disco underneath there?i think i like it, my waist is twitching

For the record i think the show is quite epic liiiiiiike those guys are weird soo weird but weird funny cool like Empire of the sun guys, you should totally check out Empire of the sun-High and low, thank me later

I love the idea actually, when i was in college i had a roomie who would always watch family guy before he sleeps, a daily routine, we loved it together, i dig this

DVD players did start to come into existance while i was in college but they were very expensive and you couldn't record anything on them. Hence, keeping the VCR around. Oh how things have changed. :) btw-i hate most disco :P

Hehehe, how things have really changed, and so many more to see, hopefully

This is a mystery itself, lalala....
This guys are funny, lalala.....
My teeth are already out, lalala.....

Hahahahah, thanks for the compliment, it's my own way of contributing to the topic in question..... Lalala

The description of this show takes my mind straight to a similarly funny show on DSTV. The impractical Jokers. I can say in my personal view that one would most enjoy this show either Drunk or high on green. Laughing my ass off 🤣🤣.
Kinda interesting to me , it’s the best way to me to spend a lazy day having extra entertainment to the movie the presenters and myself are watching but me at the extreme side of the screen.
I think you should see the impractical Jokers show , you’d love it.

I think the intro song to the show was done in the 80’s by a God knows legend of the 80’s . I can’t stop laughing

i will check that show out. I am writing it down, with a pencil (because i am old school) right now. Thanks for the suggestion.

Smiles , I totally understand what it means to be old school , my mom does that everytime. Writing dates on walls, doors . Reminders in form of date written everywhere, she not the diary type I concluded.
You’re most welcome my friend

I really enjoyed the original show, rifftrax and the latest netflix show. Those guys are amazing and hilarious. Wish I had the skill to be so funny on the spot.

I used to watch that all the time. Your post really brings it back.

The basic premise behind this show is pretty remarkable, and only because it actually worked despite being exceptionally dumb.

Really hilarious; that’s the concept behind it. I certainly will love this show because I’ll pick out what is fun for myself. That is why it may seem so weird to other people who don’t find their fun in it.

It is like when watching a football match in the midst of different people probably on a big screen. Individuals display their responsiveness to the game by making gestures or making funny sounds. To me it is really cool to hear all this and laugh while concentrating. To some other is it basic disturbance of their attention.

If I had robot friends, I would watch movies and trash talk with them...

I remember watching a bit of this as a kid. Muppets, Night Court, Cheers, Mash, The Twilight Zone.. I would Tape these all. I would start the timer about 5 min before and then again 5 min after. I hoped and prayed that the dang thing would work. Nothing like a show running over and in turn I missed the last 5 min..uggg. That sucks! And whats this about VCR's being relics? I still have one and use it ;-) The kind with a DVD on one side and VCR on the other. BAM!

I'll have to re watch a bit of MST3000 but thinking I'll probably bore quick.

I loved this show as a teen. I used to watch reruns of it on comedy central all the time. I'd like to watch a few episodes now just to see if i still find it as funny.

Great show! I remember watching this too!
Fantastic roasting of old movies never gets old!!

wow.. It like I'm watching two movies at the same time. a movie inside another movie, and it's ridiculously funny as well , although I really don't think I can recommend this any kid due to the adult language. @gooddream You really had cool youthful years. It's kinda of hard to come across productions such as these nowadays. Seeing this video evoked memories of the good old days -the days of cassettes,VCR ,and tapes. That is a good piece of article right there. Thanks man @gooddream

i went and saw the only one they released for theaters. It was simply entitled "MST3K: the Movie" and it was a movie theater vortex because you are in the cinema watching people watching a movie in a cinema.

That sounds funny and slightly confusing. Haha.

haha, this is quite hilarious, you have some wonderful college memories, i would love to watch this, maybe is because perhaps a nerd? Is like watching Charlie Chaplin watch Mr. Bean act, can you give some nice recommendations so i can watch?

there are hundreds of episodes and one movie. Since the movie had a much higher production budget, i think i would recommend starting there.

Yes you right, when this Tv shows was play at first time at the television, peoples leave the work for watching to these Tv shows, that's time these TV shows really important, but nowadays peoples have no time for watching TV or like this type TV shows, and now i watching these all of videoes and like it, well thanks for remembering us to this old is gold historical TV shows.

I think many old videos
Although today I saw through you
Thank you for a nice post @gooddream

You are really awesome by sharing your had back in the school on here with how you make things work out. Well you might be troublesome back in the college days but I tell you a lot of them would have appreciated it more they might not had talked then but deep in the mind you brought a sense of relieved to them. Keep the good work flowing man. I enjoy one of the video and I'm still watching the remaining ones

( conocido en España como Misterio en el Espacio) As not, thanks Netflix. When the crazy Dr. Clayton Forrester and his equally nutty assistant Frank get bored of their work at the Deep 13 research center, they kidnap the Joel ordinance and send him into space at the Satellite of Love. Being in space, Joel builds Tom Servo and Crow T., who will be his robot friends and help him resist the attack of "Z" series movies that the deranged scientists are forcing him to see.

When I played the video then I know it is over 2 decades but its still funny. Most people of this generation won't like it nowadays. It is really nice

I have your vote, the funds how? @zuhrafriska

Hi, we used to watch this all the time. It was very entertaining along with the show Pete and Pete.

Hahaha sounds fun, I will see right now what it is about and I will comment on it. It's funny how sometimes some programs are so basic in their subject matter and win thousands of fans. Sometimes we just want something simple to enjoy without so much protocol.

outstanding show that i've ever seen
i am also fan

I like this blog. I love science so much.
