National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)

Directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik. Written by John Hughes. Starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Juliette Lewis, Johnny Galecki, Randy Quaid, Doris Roberts, E.G. Marshall, William Hickey, and Brian Doyle-Murray

The third instalment of National Lampoon Vacation movies sees the Griswold family staying at home this time. Clark wants a big family Christmas like the good old days, but his continual string of bad luck means nothing runs smoothly.

Based on a story John Hughes wrote for National Lampoon Magazine back in 1980, named ‘Christmas ‘59’, Christmas Vacation initially received mixed reviews, but is now considered by many to be a Christmas classic.

Christmas Vacation also sports it’s own sequel, the god-awful TV movie Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie’s Island Adventure, where Randy Quaid’s character shipwrecks his family on isolated island in the South Pacific.

It’s worth noting that the Griswold children are played by different actors in each film, and Christmas Vacation features the most famous combination of siblings, played by future rocker and Scientologist Juliette Lewis and Big Bang Theory/Rosanne star Johnny Galecki.

My all time favorite Christmas movie!

A firm family favourite growing up, my personal favourite is Muppet Christmas Carol though.

That's a good one too, by Clark Griswold is one of my favorite characters of all time. My family on vacation? Griswolds.
