Hellboy

Guillermo Del Toro

122 Minutes

Release Date: 02 April, 2004

What's It About: Hellboy is an orphaned demon-turned superhero who works for a government agency and protects the world from supernatural threats. The forces of evil, the Nazis, are working to use the occult to summon great beats from another world to aid in their war against the allies, and Hellboy and his team must help stop them.

The Good: Lots and lots of make-up and costume eyecandy to see. I really liked seeing all the characters all dressed up and made up, and each would have taken hours to put together. The visuals themselves are great and exciting, as is the action. I particularly liked alot of the steampunk/dieselpunk aesthetic going on in the film, particularly in one of the villainous characters, who I found fascinating.

The Bad: I found this film to be pretty cliched and somewhat badly acted. The villains are quite basic and there isn't a whole lot memorable about them. If anything, I kept thinking of other superhero fantasy films whenever I saw characters from this film, such as X-Men's Wolverine whenever I saw Karl Ruprecht Kroenen (who is a pretty badass character in his own right).

Best Performance: Ron Perlman as Hellboy. Perlman had started gaining momentum with his film appearances and Hellboy was one of his first bigger roles. He is able to really take on the persona of Hellboy and can pull off the devil-may-care expressions with swagger, all the while with a huge cigar sticking out the side of his mouth. He is full of wit and sarcasm and it shows that Hellboy seems to be a bit tired of being ordered around all the time, but doesn't seem to do anything about it, instead just continuing to follow orders.

Should I Watch It: This is a solid comic adaptation with plenty of fun and action. Hellboy himself is what keeps the film from being another generic adaptation, since he's so full of things to say to help lighten the mood. There's plenty of fun to be had with this one. None of the plot makes sense, but don't try to make any of it otherwise you'll spoil it for yourself. Just sit back and switch yourself off for 2 hours.
