Sanctum (2011) was a film that had a bad reception of the public as of the critic, but still I want to share it with you and the main reason is that in some occasions the cine offers us something more in a film than only good performances or a great script. Let's start by exposing the negative part, the film had a bad impact because the moment in which it was launched and after the marketing that made it was sold as a film made by James Cameron recognized Director, but that realized the work of executive producer in this film, also the script had enough lack in the development of the characters as well as empty in the resolution of some situations, in addition to the poor performance of some actors. But leaving this aside that makes this movie worth seeing?
The argument presents a group of speleology that are being explored in Esa-ala Caves of Papua New Guinea and at the moment of entering the cave a hurricane in the area causes that the place where the settlement is flooded, making it impossible to get out of it where they entered, leaving as the only escape option to enter unknown terrain and look for an exit. The main story is not the escape as we might think this is an excuse to show us the relationship between Frank McGuire the leader of the expedition and his son Joshua "Josh" McGuire who do not get along very well and shows us how through this survival experience their ties grow and they get to know each other, the role of Frank played by Richard Roxburgh fulfills his mission is really a person little charismatic and of bad temper does not like to communicate with others, is methodical and things should be done as he says or do not, the character can´t connect with the viewer, which is a weak point because when watching a movie we look for a representation or with whom we feel identified.
The highlight of Sanctum is the decisions that are made, the film we face as if we were the protagonists and we should ask the questions, What would i do in this situation? Would he have made the same decision? Actually this is the most important part, The decisions they take, make us think that we would have done it, maybe during our lives we never do speleology or face moments of life or death like the movie, but if we can face situations that require make a difficult decision.
The evolution of the characters like Josh and Frank is appropriate these grow and know little by little in addition to come to respect, which they had never done, Sanctum is a movie that should be seen as a family i know is not to relax, but if you remind us that many times we do not know those people that we have close and we did not take the time to do it, maybe some critics thought this a cliché but it is something real and happens very often some parents do not share with their children to dedicate all the time to their work and when the time comes they do not even know each other.
I encourage you to see Sanctum let yourself immerse yourself in this movie that will provide you with a story of adventure and drama that despite your mistakes, if you are someone who can meditate on the decisions of the characters you surely like.
