He Never Died (film): Rollins is great / film has its moments

I was surprised to see Henry Rollins in a Netflix film. I knew that he had done some bit roles in the past but was unaware that he was star-worthy. I have to say that i was extremely impressed with him. The rest of the cast does a good job as well as there are no stand out bad actors in this low budget film.

He Never Died is a dark film with a bunch of gore but also some subtle humor that is mostly delivered by "Jack" who is played by Henry Rollins. Jack is introduced as a dangerous looking but harmless-to-normal-people dude (his back has two massive scars that immediately appear to be where there were wings attached at one point.) He has what most people would consider a routine and boring life as he does the same things every day such as eat at the same restaurant and go play bingo.

He does this because for some reason this helps to keep his uncontrollable desire for cannibalism at bay. Yeah, i know that sounds strange and maybe as a spoiler but it is in the official description and the trailer so... whatever. He never initiates any sort of trouble, but trouble seems to find him at the hands of young punks, and later mobsters who think they can order him around. The nonchalant manor in which he reacts to what most would consider to be extremely dangerous situations is where the humor kicks in.

I would say that story is pretty good, because Rollins pulls off the role of Jack so well. However, the idea of a reluctant hero while interesting, is in a way a bit ruined because it becomes quite apparent that Jack (and that is not his real name) has no weakness. He can't be hurt or killed, at least not physically.

I remember years ago there was a video by Henry Rollins called "Liar" where he showed his chops as an actor but I never knew that he went on to do full-length films until yesterday. If you are a fan of gore-flicks with dark humor I think you will enjoy this one. Rollins is really top-drawer and I look forward to seeing him in other things because of this one.

on a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers!" I give He Never Died the overall rating of....

I feel like he had a short recurring part on Sons of Anarchy. I think he was a neo nazi or something like that. I could be wrong though. The only thing I really remember him from is the song "Get Some" that he did. I think that is right anyway.
