The Truman Show (film): A good, mostly serious film that showed Carey CAN do more than silly

Before he went batS**T crazy and started harassing politicians in order to remain relevant while simultaneously having films go straight to DVD, Jim Carey had a string of wildly successful films. A vast majority of them were the slapstick comedies the he earns his real money for, but a few were mixed in there that toyed with the idea that Carey is capable of acting outside of the comedy genre. This was one of those films and I thought it was great.

By the way the movie poster's image was made entirely with very small pictures of Jim Carey in order to make one giant Jim Carey (I have no idea what this sort of art is called) and it cost the studio $75,000 to make this.

The plot of the movie is Truman Burbank (Jim Carey) and how he is the star of a reality show that he doesn't know he is on. There are hundreds of cameras in every part of his life that he doesn't know are there, including in very personal moments of his life such as when he is in the bathroom.

Everyone in his life is an actor, including his wife, his parents, and his friends. They are all in on it for ratings. Everything in his life is a lie and he goes through the motions 24-hours a day to a worldwide audience. It is meant to be a wildly popular show and therefore many people attempt to break the illusion and invade the massive studio in an attempt to tell Truman the truth. All of these people are stopped.

Every attempt that Truman makes to go towards the edge of his town which is an island (as space is limited) is intercepted by various roadblocks like fake radiation hazards, road construction, or forest fires.

I don't want to reveal too much of the film because even though I think many of Jim's attempts at non-comedies fall very flat, this is one of the handful of ones that I thought was a triumphant success.

A vast majority of the world agreed with me also, as the critics generally gave favorable reviews and the film made over 200 million dollars globally. Jim is fantastic in this and so is Laura Linney, who plays his fake wife. This is likely on my personal list of top 50 favorite films ever.

oh yeah this movie was really good, I remember I watched quite a while back but was very interesting! cool post about a movie, keep up the work and have a great day 😊😊

Ah yes that was a solid movie.

I am a fan of some of his Ace Ventura stuff and REALLY liked ME, Myself and Irene.......gott check that one out.

This move was something else and I often find myself reflecting back to it. Those moments in your life when you are thinking, "This seriously can't be happening!" will become times when you are wondering if you are just the unwitting star of your own show.

Awesome movie
Very entertaining
Jim carey at his best. I was pleasantly surprised with his acting skills

I feel like I'm in a Truman Show for at least the first 50 percent of my life so far.
I love Jim Carrey, his movies, interviews etc.
Ace Ventura and even Mr. Popper's Penguins. 😀

I really like this type of films.Beacuse aims is more important in our life. You achieve your life goals with only hardworking. This guy working very hard to achieve his dreamz.including in very personal moments of his life such as when he is in the bathroom.Thats so funny and amazing.10 out of 8.5 Thats to much good. All peoples like this movie.Very interesting trailor. You are absolutely right.Everyone is a actor in his life. Thanks for sharing.

The music and visuals are top notch. The cinematography has a reality TV feel that is clever but never intrusive. The shot selection is of the highest quality, particularly in the movie's final sequence. Muscially, this film is incredible. Phillip Glass is a dream on the piano, perfectly evoking the mood for each section of the narrative. The two combine excellently during the scene in which Truman breaks his routine for the first time. During the sequence, Truman makes subtle changes to the bland routine he follows compliantly every day. The emotion of the music when combined with the apparent simplicity of Truman's actions makes this scene one the most powerful I'v ever experienced.

This film is an absolute gem. It effortlessly combines everything a classic film should have. It has comedy, drama, strong character development, atmosphere, originality, superb visuals, a superb score, tight writing, raises interesting moral questions as well as providing insight into the human condition. One cannot watch this spectacular film without wondering how a human would react when put in that kind of situation. It touches on our sense of adventure, desire for conformity and the courage we require to question the life we are presented with. 'The Truman Show' does all this in the most accessible and compelling fashion. One of the greatest films of our time.

This movie is one of those films that make you think about the nature of your own reality, kind of like the Matrix. At least it does for me! I have always been a bit suspicious that we are in some kind of simulation, but that's a longer conversation.

I loved the product placement bits in the Truman Show. They gave me a good laugh.

If you haven't seen it, you should also check out Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind starring Jim Carrey. That one and this one are my two favorite Carrey films.

Indeed. I totally agree with you, I also liked those moments when the wife promoted the products, and Truman asked who she was talking to.

LOL! That was exactly the scene that I was thinking about when I posted that comment.

Man this has to be one of my favourite films, it’s awesome! I like it now more than I did back in the day. Jim’s early films, like in the late 90s were amazing! The mask, Truman show, liar liar, ace Ventura’s.... all amazing!!!

Truman's show is an excellent film, I saw it about two years ago and I was impressed. Jim Carrey's performance is impeccable as always. It's a film to reflect on how we lead our lives, especially now with the exposure of social networks. It seems that we live in a permanent show. A very good review, @gooddream.

Excellent movie, it's true what you say about Carrey, but this is really one of his best movies, including comedy movies. The actors that accompany him are very good too. It is impossible not to sympathize with the character. A great reflection on how they can use a person to obtain entertainment. For Truman, his parents, his friends, his wife, everything was a lie.

this film fucked my mind up as a kid. It is also responsible for creating a new mental health disorder where people believe they are the star of a secret tv show

This is a good film. I haven't seen it in a long time. The fact that all including the audience knew that truman believed his life was all true is really sick.
