I still love Matthew McConaughey well enough as an actor; but, I can't let his most recent interview on the gun issue pass into people's distant memories without pointing out how wrong the entire other side of the issue is.
Mr. McConaughey seemed to be proud to say that changing the term "gun control" to "gun responsibility" was a great way to get people to listen. After all, every good person is all for gun responsibility. I definitely am. I own four guns. I'm probably buying a fifth at the end of the month. I've been shooting for twenty years and I've never injured anyone with a gun.
Mr. McConaughey didn't realize the exact same thing that every other anti-2A person doesn't realize -- that they're so isolated and insulated that they don't even realize when they're admitting that they're lying.
This isn't anything new. Josh Sugarmann wrote about how effective it would be to exploit people's ignorance and emotions by keeping the term "assault weapon" as mystifying and nebulous as possible almost forty years ago.
Mr. McConaughey is just pulling the same bullshit that Antifa has been pulling.
You just use language that every good person has to agree with; but, you have the advantage of lying while your opponent is stuck telling the truth and trying to navigate the words that you're deliberately manipulating.
No, you're not for gun responsibility. No, you're not for gun safety. If you were, my friends and I would be the last people who you would want to see in legal trouble. You're in favor of gun control.
Just say it, and I'll debate you in good faith. I'm not gonna engage in good faith if you lead with a lie.
