The viperfish’s teeth protrude far beyond its mouth and eyes. To scale, if your teeth were this big, they would stick out an amazing 12in! It has the longest teeth, in proportion to its head, of any animal.
This monster fish is one of the fiercest predators of the deep. To attract its prey it has a long dorsal spine with light-producing tip. It is thought that the viperfish approaches the victims high speed, impaling them on its teeth, extending its hinged skull to swallow large prey.
The viperfish has over 350 light organs on its body to attract fish in the dark depths where it hunts.
There are more than 1,500 kinds of fish glows or shine to lure prey and attract mates. Some can be seen from 98ft away.
