Friday Fishing Stories: Back to My Roots

in fishing •  7 years ago

I “grew up” in the suburbs of Detroit, where I lived from age 5 to 15 while we followed my dad’s work. I was born in California, and moved back at 15, but during those formative years in Michigan, I spent a lot of time outdoors and my favorite hobby was fishing.

All my family lives is in California, and my childhood friends were mostly too young to develop lasting bonds (with a few exceptions), so I really do not have any reason to go back and visit Michigan. However, a few years back, my wife and I decided to go back there and visit the place where I grew up, just for the fun of it.

We did a number of tourist-ie things while in Detroit, but the highlight of the trip was visiting a couple of my old fishing holes, which is where I fell in love with fishing in the first place. I, of course, brought a cheap fishing pole and gear with me on the trip so that I could try to catch a bass or two in the old fishing spots.

We first tried to gain access to a private lake which was by membership only, where I frequented as a kid. Despite my background story and plea to let us in, they did not grant us access, so we were only able to snap a picture from far away – you stink Murrays Lake!!

We then traveled down the road to Independence Lake, which is a public lake with park and shoreline access. My wife humored me, and followed me around while I did some fishing like the good old days. I managed to catch a decent number of largemouth bass and even a few Sunfish in a couple of hours. Getting to experience different environments is one of the highlights of traveling for me, and this environment and fishing like I did in my youth led to a enjoyable and nostalgic day walking around the lake. Here are a few pictures from that fishing session:

Perhaps one day I will return with my kids and show them how daddy did it back in the old days... Ha!

Thanks for taking a trip down memory lane with me.

What brings you feelings of nostalgia?

Thank you for posting @brian.rrr.

Lovely photographs and Friday Fish Tale.

Greetings to you and your family.

Cheers.

What a beautiful lake and nice fish. Fishing and hunting nostalgia are the best forms of nostalgia for me. Some of my greatest memories are from hunting and fishing with my dad and brothers. I hope you do get the chance to take your kids back to that beautiful lake!

I had no idea you grew up in Detroit. I have always wanted to visit the Silverdome and Joe Louis Arena. Fishing in Michigan is very similar to the fishing that we do here in Ontario. Our regular lake her is full of Bass, Sunfish, Walleye and Pike.
The nostalgia kickers for me are 80'2 and early 90's references. The music always brings me back and the toys and games we played. I visit home (Halifax, Nova Scotia) once a year and seeing the ocean and having lobster dinners makes me think of when I was a kid. Always good memories. Last year we took the whole family home and they loved experiencing all the things I enjoyed about growing up there. Your kids will absolutely love when you take them to Detroit. So, You are a loyal Dodgers fan I know but no feelings for the ole Tigers??

Great friend @brian.rrr. Truly, this is a very complete and moving fishing story of your past in fishing, you explain every detail since the beginning of fishing in your life. I see because you like fishing so much, it's something you've been doing since you were a child, so you've been fishing in your veins, many people are born with skills, perhaps yours has been fishing since childhood. It is good that I was able to return to that place where you spent a fantastic childhood fishing, although they were not allowed to enter the place, but I'm sure that just being there in that place where you were many times as a young man was a great joy and excitement to you. Hopefully you can return some day with your beautiful children, so Jacop can accompany his father in fishing in that place where you were so happy, and maybe he will also catch something, because I'm sure it would be of great joy for you, that Jacop When I grow up I have a fishing story in the same place where you had it since you were little, and when you and Jacop grow up, they laugh and remember every moment there fishing. I'm sure it would be very happy for you, very nice story my friend, thank you for this wonderful fishing story. Greetings from Venezuela.

My man that is awesome! You got me wanting to post about my child hood activities. I hope you don't mind me borrowing your idea, but that is something we all can use here on Steemit which is a great way to reach out to people that love to talk about their child hood.

What a good brother and what a great experience, sometimes it's good to see where we came from.
@calitoo

A very interesting trip, in the middle and berostalgia in a small place and channeling hobbies with family. A great holiday ..

Thanks for sharing your tuna fishing story with us. Sounds like a great time. I am trying to imagine if I'd have the courage to go up in that tower, haha. That seared tuna looks and sounds delicious!

Looks like you did well despite not getting to visit your old stomping grounds. Sounds like they need a bit more joy in their lives. Sorry, man. Hey, at least you still had a day in the sun with your wife and got to catch a few fish!

Hello how are you, your fishing history on Friday today change of time in Venezuela are 8:30 at night almost always published around 4:00 in the afternoon, this story I like because you went to vicitar the site where You grew up, in that place you have beautiful memories!

Thank you for giving your life moment . Fishing is my hobby . In my village there are river there me and my friend do fishing.

Friend Brian, I'm glad you were able to knock down the obstacles that were put to you, and in the end, have a good day doing what you're passionate about. More they lost for not letting you in, than you for not doing it. I Hope fully in the future you can have the opportunity to take your children to see your roots. All the best for you and yours. Best regards.

Fishing mania OK... josss

At last everyone returns to their roots , like leaves of a tree.

When we fish for love, bait with our heart, not our brain...
Fish are so big and fishing is an amazing experience @brian.rrr

Remember where we are from where we came from and how we grew up, it's great it's like being wrapped in a bubble of time...
