By April 10, 90 of the spillway's 360 bays had been opened, allowing 80,000 cubic feet per second of freshwater containing sediment and nutrients -- mostly fertilizer from the Midwest -- to spill into Lake Pontchartrain.
Interesting article about the closing of the Bonne Carre Spillway in South Louisiana. Some people don't like the opening of the spillway, but it's needed to stop flooding down river. It was a brief opening this year, so not much effects either way.
