This year, spring floodwaters from the upper Mississippi River and Ohio River threatened to flow past New Orleans at volumes well over 1.25 million cubic feet, a level considered dangerous by the Corps because of its potential to damage levees.
Interesting article about the closing of the Bonnet Carre Spillway. It seems like year after year the spillway is opened, I think one of the main reasons is that humans have paved over so much of the ground that usually would have soaked in the water. Expect more of the same in years to come....
