My Most Recent Weird Pre-Workout Combination - [Fitness Q&A]

in fitness •  7 years ago

Over the past few years, I've been using a caffeine based popular pre-workout. However, since I decided to cycle off caffeine, I thought of trying to concoct a non-caffeinated pre-workout with stuff that I had in the pantry.

So, here's what's inside this unusual combo:

  • 4-5 grams of creatine monohydrate
  • 1 tsp of ashwagandha powder
  • 1 tsp of maca
  • 1 tsp of apple fibers
  • 1-2 tbsp of lemon paste
  • 1-2 tbsp of grapefruit paste

I usually mix the powders first. Then I add the lemon paste and the grapefruit paste and mix them all together. I get this thick paste on top of which I could add a bit of water to make it more fluid. But I usually don't because I like the texture.

There's no actual solid evidence that these ingredients could potentiate my workout except creatine monohydrate that's been researched extensively, but then-again, there's no solid evidence either that normal pre-workouts which contain a whole host of ingredients are helpful either, other than helping money go out of your pocket. The only potential useful ingredient, in my view, in all these combos if caffeine, that is known for its stimulant properties.

Interesting combination of ingredients. Although perhaps the science isn't proven, do you feel better taking this pre-workout than the caffeine?

I drink coffee before my workout. I'm not sure if it helps me, but it wakes me up. LOL Cheers!

creatine probably has an effect, but it's not subjectively noticeable. the rest of the ingredients are there to assist the delivery of creatine in a flavored way, and probably not much more even though the proponents of supplements and herbals swear by the benefits of ashwagandha and maca (they could have some effects over the long term, but I don't know of good studies to support them).

There's evidence that chocolate milk is effective, but that's post-workout not pre-.

Have you tried a preworkout that has Beta Alanine in it? I have tried many preworkouts and have found that I get the best workouts when I use a preworkout that has a good combo of beta alanine, caffeine, and creatine. Also, pizza is especially essential for gainz! ;)
