Does Low-Carb Hurt Your Physical Performance - Keto Cut Day 11 & 12

in fitness •  7 years ago

I’ve been working out intensely for about 6 years now and a lot of friends and family ask if being on a low-carb, ketogenic diet negatively impacts my weight-lifting and training regimes.

I think this is a really important question to ask for anyone who is serious about their performance in the gym. For me and many others, working out on a ketogenic diet can be tough for the first week or so on the diet. As time goes on, I actually notice that my physical performance gets even better while on a low carb diet.

There are some great explanations all over the internet that address the fact that many low-carb athletes can often perform at the same level or even better than high-carb athletes. One of the major reasons why this is true is that the body becomes incredibly efficient at deploying the small amount of carbs that it has available when on a ketogenic diet.

Low-carb athletes have often been able to perform longer than high-carb athletes for this reason. If you think of it like a tank of gas in 2 different cars - let’s compare them as being a hummer (high-carb athlete) versus a hybrid (low-carb athlete). The hummer has a larger tank of gas, but will run out of gas much quicker because it’s far less efficient than the hybrid. The hybrid has a much smaller tank, but is far more efficient at using the little gas that it has to go longer distances.

The Study:

This study formed 2 groups of ultra-marathon runners. 1 group was put on a low-carb, high fat (ketogenic) diet. The other group was put on a traditional high-carb, low fat diet. Then the researchers had both groups run for 3 hours straight. The researches then ran a series of tests on both groups.

Their findings were really interesting. One thing they found was that both groups had the same amount of glycogen left in their muscles at the end of the run. Let me illustrate this with some numbers:

Imagine that the people from group 1 (the low-carb group) had about 70g of carbs in their bodies at the beginning of the race and group 2 (high-carb) had about 350g of carbs in their bodies at the beginning of the race. At the end of the race, they both came down to equal levels of 40g of carbs left in their bodies - regardless of being low-carb or high-carb to begin with.

Based on this study and the numbers I gave above, you can see that the low-carb group was immensely more efficient at utilizing the little amount of carbs that they had at the beginning of the race when compared to the high-carb group who burned through the vast majority of the carbs in their bodies.

QOTD: Have you ever questioned if physical performance would be better or worse on a ketogenic diet? What do you think about the findings in the study on ultra-marathon runners?

Being into weights I always thought worse than with a high carb diet.

Cograts on your progress!

Thanks for sharing another part of the keton diet @khaleelkhazi. That study contains a lot of data but hard to make complete sense out of it. It seems that runners on a low carbohydrate diet naturally burn more fat. The study did not talk about the side effects of a low carbohydrate diet.

Back in the days athletes prepared by eating lots of pasta but I'm really curious how runners prepare the night before a race. Actually the marathon winners from Kenya do not eat much meat. They eat grains and vegetables. Some even fast before running. Use these search words "Eat like a Kenyan, run like a Kenyan." to find an informative and interesting article about running and diet.

Stay happy and healthy

Thanks for reading and leaving your thoughts @mineopoly! Yeah, the study was more specifically homing in on the fact that those who run on a ketogenic diet are able to more efficiently use the little amount of carbs that they do have in their bodies. The only real performance side effects that I've heard of (from someone who's on a proper ketogenic diet - one who's getting the right amount of fats) is a decrease in short bursts of strength. I've noticed that a little bit as well but it's really a tiny difference that's hardly noticeable. I can still move the same amount of weight, it just feels a tiny more effort is required.

I will definitely read that article, thanks for the suggestion! And yeah this paper addresses those types of runners who "carb-load" pre-race. At the end of the race a "carb-loaded" athlete and a low-carb athlete had the same amount of carbs left over in their bodies which tells us that the carb-deprived athlete burned far less carbs during the race than the carb-loaded athlete. Interesting stuff!

Thanks for your reply. I can at least catch my mistake when I look at my comment again. "fast before eating." I meant "fast before running." LOL

Of course! Haha I make small mistakes all the time as well, nobody's perfect and it's the thoughtfulness that counts (of which you have an abundance!)

I always thought that robbing the body of necessary carbs would be detrimental in the short term but would be balanced out medium term in the form of performance gained from cutting out the crap. Empty carbs is a concept that makes me question everything I eat now!

Also, I keep looking at your weight goals and thinking that, as your performance at the gym improves, you will see the gains in the form of denser and heavier muscle.

How you feeling lately? Ready to run a marathon?

Yeah, conventional wisdom would lead us to believe that less carbs = less energy = lesser performance but it turns out to not be true (and in fact could be the exact opposite)... if you’re carbs are low enough to get your body keto-adapted then you can easily see a spike in sustained energy throughout the entire day! I feel pretty energetic no matter what the time is and cutting out empty carbs definitely has a positive effect on insulin levels!

Yeah I’ve definitely gained muscle mass over the past year, though progress has been much slower because I’ve been lifting for a while now. “Noobie” gains are something I miss greatly!

Haha I don’t know about a marathon, but I do feel great and my cardio is definitely getting much much better! I’ve never been much of a runner, but I do want to run a marathon at some point!

Off topic question but including because of the low carb and fatty acids. Do you incorporate sardines in your diet?

That's a great question - Sardines are a great addition to a keto diet, but sadly, I'm not a fan of them. Otherwise you can bet the farm that they'd be included in my diet plan!

Stairmasters are a pain when you first get into it. But they get your legs looking like a soccer player.

I agree! Stair master is a killer! I love to do it on a really high setting and doing it after leg day always gives a nice burn!

That's a very interesting study! Really goes to show that keto has a ton of benefits!

Yeah it's really informative and unexpected!! Keto has tons of other performance benefits that I'll cover more of!

wow there so importance of physical fitness. every one who is fit to capable of to perform a good healthy life . fitness are me capable to body fitness and mantel for best performance for daily work.

this is really nice to know about your weight goals,

hope you accomplish them very soon

My best wishes are always with you @khaleel,,,,,
