[Flat Earth] Response to @DavidWilbur 5 Reasons to Avoid the Flat Earth Controversy

in flatearth •  8 years ago  (edited)

Greetings @davidwilber, glad to see you on Steemit!

I know you are a committed disciple of the Messiah Yeshua and to the Torah from our Father. I have great respect for you and your teachings. I don't mean to cause controversy with this reply, but there are a few things that might be good to consider before dismissing the Flat Earth phenomenon that we are witnessing today.

Five Reasons to Avoid the Flat Earth Controversy

The Bible explicitly instructs us to avoid foolish controversies

I believe that understanding the nature of the world we live in, created by God, is anything but foolish. Rather than studying flat earth, Bible believers should consider learning about the ancient cosmology that Yeshua and His disciples believed. If the Torah teaches that the world is a spinning globe circling the sun (as we are taught by the scientific community today), then it is right for a disciple of Yeshua to agree with Him. If not we should conform to His image.

I always preferred biblical accommodation concerning science and the bible. I once believe in both evolution and the bible creation account, since I believed in an allegorical creation account. I was once convinced that the bible and "science" were both correct concerning the world we live in. What's alarming is how easy it was for me to yield the biblical text in favor of scientific understanding according to my education from my youth. That is my testimony anyway.

It causes division in the body of Messiah

Absolutely! Regardless of the shape of the earth, the truth will always cause division. That's why we have so many denominations today - people leave the doctrines that they believe are false and latch on to doctrines they believe are true. Or latch on to the church with the coolest music, if they don't care about doctrine.

It’s a distraction from what we should be focusing on

If a person believes that the flat-earth controversy is foolish, then absolutely it would be a distraction from more important topics. Anything would be more important. Why would anyone focus their attention on a foolish and dividing controversy?

It hurts our witness and profanes the name of Messiah

When I was young, I was taught that God was "up in Heaven". Beyond the blue of the sky. Beyond the dark of the night. This is what I believed. When I was older and learned that Heaven is a empty vacuum, it planted a seed of doubt into the God in Heaven idea. The earth is a spinning globe. I could not point UP to the sky and point at God. Did God exist up over the northern hemisphere or the southern hemisphere? Did God exist at all?

After repenting and giving myself over to the Word of God (Yeshua in the flesh) and believing in the bible's account of a 6 day creation, I accommodated my scientific knowledge over the biblical text. I overlooked questions like "What day did God make the planets" or "What did the earth spin around before the sun was created?" or "How do the Heavens recede like a scroll?" or "Where in the cosmos does God reside?"

After learning the biblical cosmology, these things are beginning to make sense to me. My faith has increased. For me, the globe has been a stumbling block for years, but now I believe in God more than ever before, because He is CLOSER than ever before. He's right above us! He's beyond the blue of the sky. Beyond the dark of the night. To God be the Glory and to His Son Yeshua the Messiah!

It simply isn’t true

All I can say is give it an honest look. What convinced me is the firmament, which in my opinion is much more biblically compelling than flat-earth. Is the firmament an empty expanse dividing the air from the vacuum? Or something else?

As a final note - I initially dismissed flat earth because I was afraid of what people might say about me. I was afraid that calling Yeshua a flat-earther would be an insult to Him. I was afraid that calling the bible a flat-earth book, would cause people to dismiss it and not read it or take it seriously. But my experience has shown me that it doesn't matter. Anyone who mocks me or Yeshua or the bible for believing in the cosmology presented in the Holy text, would mock anyway. Being mocked for what you believe in (even flat earth) is an normal part of being a God-Fearer in this dark world. I just would not expect it from people who have the light of the Torah.

Again I have great respect for you and your ministry. I hope that this does not cause controversy or division, as that is not the purpose of this response.

Bless the Most High for you and your ministry. @ironshield

Yes,,, I like,

Good words @ironshield - people fear being called crazy, most criticize the flat earth theories based on assumptions and fears. Ask them to describe the flat earth model and usually they have no clue what ideas are out there besides the obviously false ones (such as falling off of the edge lol). Shalom!

Yeshua Is the One.

Maybe he does not possess the light of Torah that you assume he does.

I have my own personal experiences with him they have led me to this conclusion. I rank him now with the likes of Matthew Nolan based on his words and actions.

I always try to presume the best in people. @ironshield

"I always try to presume the best in people." and then goes on a Mute Button rampage.

Wow, so well said. Following...☺
