Now with the summertime around there are more insects outside. My neighbor has a pile of compost in his garden 5-10 meters where my office is. I don't like to use (much) pesticides so i tried some natural methods to get rid of them.
-Insect glue traps (https://amzn.to/2UiotCt)
-Fly bait traps with bait that drowns them (https://amzn.to/2ZH6xCB)
-Bug zappers with electricity (https://amzn.to/2MMIAYm)
-Diatomaceous earth (https://amzn.to/2ML3rLW)
Each method has it's own advantages and disadvantages.
Glue traps
Are glue traps a good way to catch annoying insects around the house or garden?
Glue traps seemed to be very effective but they can't become to wet so that makes them better for indoor use than outdoor. They can last a few months until you have to replace them. The better brands of glue traps use some smell as bait. (It's perfumed by the stuff)
Outdoor fly trap
I tried some traditional fly traps that work with a bait that drowns the flies. This has proven to be very effective if you have a big plague so you place this trap at the center of the problem. Most of these traps can catch up to 40000 flies.
The disadvantage is that it produces an unpleasant smell so not really recommended for indoor use.
Bug zappers
I like bug zappers for the fact that they are pretty low maintenance. Just remove the death insects once in a while and that's it.
They work better at night than during the day because bugs will notice them much quicker. Bug zappers that use uv licht are more effective than the led versions, but less power efficiënt. When a bug is killed there is a load zapping noise (which might be annoying in for example a bedroom).
You can use most bug zappers outdoors and indoors but they are not completely water resistant. If you live in a very rainy climate it's better to use it outdoors under a roof then in open air.
Some outdoor bug zappers come with a solar panel. I found them to be ineffective for the reason that they don't deliver enough power. The small solar panel doesn't recharge the battery enough during the day. So you end up with a weak light that doesn't attracts many bugs. Better to get a version with a power cable instead, they are not worth the money.
Diatomaceous earth
This product is safe to humans but not to insects. It damages their shell that protects them so they dry out after a few days while being in contact with this powder. This also works very well on mites and smaller insects.
Another advantage is since it's not chemical mites can't build up a resistance to this. Lot of the times when you use pesticides they become resistant but diatomaceous earth has a mechanical action.
What about the frog?
I have seen Some farmland
Every night, a lot of frogs are calling
I had never touched a mosquito in those places.
