in flooding •  6 years ago  (edited)

They said last night they were putting out piles of sand and bags for folks to use and gave a list of locations. Well, we went for our after dinner walk and went up the street. This is what we saw........

Come and make sand bags! Nice. I can not say enough how well organized they are here! In Syracuse, where I'm from, no one can get their act together for anything.

Here's a few pictures from the web...........

Thankfully we are not supposed to have anymore rain until maybe Thursday.

Personally i am not a fan of sandbags... I have filled waaaay too many in my military past! Ive heard also that they are not effective, rot and further contaminate the area later on?
Maybe someone else can shed light on that one?
Great Pictures! And a good insight into the flooding.
Hope everything gets dryer and better for all the affected folk....

There was footage on the news that night of them out there putting up what looked like a thin metal wall and they piled up sandbags at the base. I have never seen anything like that anywhere else. So, they must know what you do from past experience about using just sandbags. I imagine they did that in multiple areas. Pretty neat! I can't find a picture of it. The sand bags and sand out for people would be better than nothing since all this went down in the middle of the night. The worst was around 1 am and the storms were more intense and larger than anticipated. I'm shocked they provided it! I have never seen a city or town care so much for the people. The response was sooooo fast. They were like army ants out there! Just amazing.

We are up stream from Des Moines itself and our area is much improved from yesterday. We just went out and walked around. Lots of mud piles and dunes. It's summer so I think the next concern people will have is mold and mildew in the affected businesses and homes.

howdy @squirrelbait! that's pretty impressive that your city is so organized and prepared, I've never seen that level of professionalism from a city government either, normally those two terms don't fit at all.
glad to see it drying out but what is the forecast for Thursday?

Thursday:
Scattered thunderstorms. Highs in the mid 80s and lows in the mid 60s.

I don't think it's going to be a big deal. No concern about it on the news at this point. Nice temps! Everyday it gets better. Most areas are doing very well. The local news says insurance companies are inundated with calls and the scammers are out and about. Mold and mildew, I think, is the concern now.

howdy again @squirrelbait..yeah mold sucks. You wouldn't believe the number of houses we had to go through in our real estate business that were totally enveloped in black mold, horrible. stuff gets in your lungs and can cause all kinds of problems, yuck.
glad it's much better now but that was a dramatic video of all that water rushing by!

We just came back from a walk around the neighborhood. Clean up has begun. I took pictures and some footage of a street about 4 blocks from me. I will post it later. There are A LOT of belongings on the curb. One story houses and they lost everything. TVs, Fridges, beds, etc. It was much deeper all around me than I realized. The worst was around 1 am that night so people were asleep too. Just picture that! Video coming after I have time to put it all together.

thanks squirrelbait I finally got around to seeing that video, surprisingly damaging, I hope they get a lot of help!
