REDBUD TREES IN THE SPRING

in flowers •  7 years ago

There's nothing like tasty flowers in the spring!

The Redbud tree is one of the amazing wild edibles that I met when we moved down to Arkansas. The trees become covered in an incredible amount of edible pink flowers even before the leaves show up in the spring, which is why many enjoy growing them as an ornamental tree. I recently pulled over to photograph one, and here are some of my favorites.

CREATURES IN THE FLOWERS

Interestingly enough, while I was photographing the flowers on this one, I noticed both a honeybee and a bottle-fly, so I tried to capture them in these photos.

MORE FLOWER SHOTS

Here are some more photos of just the tree and flowers. They sure are pretty, and tasty too! We like sprinkling them on top of salads to brighten things up a bit. I enjoyed eating a few of these with the @little-peppers after the photo shoot!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Until next time…

Yeah, we LOVE this tree too!

I miss the red buds so much now that I live in the south. Thank you for sharing.

So that's what they're called.

Used to see those all the time when I lived in North Carolina. Of course, I could barely see anything during that time of year due to my severe pollen allergies.

Allergies are the worst... or so I hear. Thanks @talanhorne!

I don't recall seeing these trees before. Are they a type of fruit tree, or an ornamental only? And what do the flowers taste like? Sweet? Spicy? Non-descript?

They are a nitrogen fixing legume, and the flowers are hard to describe. I'll try to grab another handful tomorrow specifically to try to taste the flavor.

Thanks. I appreciate that! I am always looking for new fruits and veggies to add to the homestead. Variety is the spice of life.

Lol papa-pepper you are really funny, why putting the proof again we all know that you post your on posts. Love those honey bees
