I spent most of my early life having negative attitude towards life without knowing what to do. The times I came close to accepting I still couldn't make sense of it.
I used to think that I was being realistic and truthful. If you asked me to be positive I could think that you were asking me to be like that proverbial Ostrich that buried its head in the ground and pretended that all was well.
It took me some good years to see that all was not well with me. Life pushed to a very tight corner and I started to re-examine my life. Luckily I had an inclination to reading books (later watching videos) of people who had been where I was and were where I wanted to go.
I found many writers and speakers sharing a similar message that was hard to ignore. One of these messages that most influenced me to think hard was this: “What you focus on is what expands.”
What you focus on expands. Whatever you put your attention on is what will become more. For instance, if you think a negative thought, more negative thoughts will come. If you think positive thoughts more positive thoughts will emerge.
That is why I find it a good thing to deliberately think on good thoughts. It may not be easy the first time you try it but knowing this truth helps shift one's understanding. If you think good thoughts, more good thoughts will come and you will feel good. Feeling good is healthy and relaxes your mind and body.
Try out this the 3 following ideas...
1). IN THE MORNING
When you wake up in the morning check out what you are thinking/feeling.
If your thoughts are on the negative, let’s say, fearful, doubtful or without hope remember 'what you focus on is what expands. Say something like 'it's going to be well on this day. Say it to yourself over and over again and again, all is well and will be well on this day. It doesn't have to make sense right away.
2). DURING THE DAY
It’s easy to get lost in the activities of the day and forget your state of mental attitude. You may fall victim of your usual negative thoughts and find your spirits going low again. If this is the case remind yourself again that ‘what you focus on is what expands’ and then focus on your good thoughts. Start to count your blessings.
3). BEFORE BED
Bed time is one of the most challenging moments especially before you fall asleep. It’s very important remind yourself once more that ‘what you focus on is what expands.’ What didn’t work put it in God’s hands, it has a good reason. Recount what good things happened in your day. Count all the positive things no matter how small or big.
What you and I focus on is what will expand. It’s good to remind ourselves this over and over. Practice is what makes perfect and that is true. We are creatures of habit, what we have practiced long enough is what is in our experiences. If we practice having good thoughts with time this will become our experience and will reflect in the many aspects of our life.
