a sea going myth

in folklore •  7 years ago

stories among fishermen and traders among the north reported seeing a squid with enormous tenticles, or a giant crab that ensnared boats and sailors alike. Everyone agreed though, that it was capable of swallowing war galleons and fishing boats with next to no notice.

The Hafgufa has been reigning terror on the Norwegian seas for longer than we can imagine.

Stories of the Hafgufa may indeed be the result of hallucinations that were brought on by weeks and months at sea, subjected to malnourishment. But we know oceans cover more than 80 percent of the planets surface. Leaving the shore has always been a dangerous undertaking. Even to experienced sailors and mariners, the behaviour of the seas winds and waves can come as a surprise.

Beware the creature which has never been caught, the Hafgufa!!
