When food is properly seasoned, it tastes good, smells nice and impresses your family, neighbours, enemies and pets, Hahahaha.
Some herbs can be used to garnish and season foods. Fresh herbs have great aromatic qualities and they are very good when roasting and sauteing food. A common one is the mint leave.
Dried herbsare good also but they do better when cooked in oil , with that, they infuse their aroma into the oil. Some times, its good to crush them with the mortar . Did you know that we have quite a lot of them? How many seasonings do you know? Do you use them? Do they have any good they do to your health? Lets find out.
BAY LEAVE
I wonder why this leave can make your cooking taste really nice but it itself is bitter when chewed. So, remember to take it off from your food before serving. Its mostly sold dry. Bay leaves has lots of vitamins A, C, magnesium, calcium, manganese, to offer to you as often as you eat it. Its good for jollof rice, stew, some people use it for beans.
MINT LEAVE
Mint has a high antioxidant capacity .Using it in your food can help you to cut down on sodium intake.
CLOVES
Ground cloves are used in curries and in baking. They also used to add flavor to meats, vegetables, desserts, etc. Just like bay leave, they are used to add a bit of flavor to food and removed before serving. Just a little is enough. It improves digestion and sexual health. It also helps in improving respiratory problems
CURRY
Curry powder is great for seasoning meats, beans and vegetables.
It is good if you want to prevent cancer. It serves as a protection against heart disease, relieves pain and boost bone health. It also helps the immune system against bacterial infections
THYME
This comes readily in a dry form. Some people put thyme in Beans and in vegetables. The flavour is almost like that of rosemary. I hardly boil meat without thyme. I learnt it is good for cough, cold, stomach ache, Diarrhoea, etc.
PARSLEY
Parsley is quite famous among the herbs, it is widely used. It can be used to garnish soups, stews and sauces. It has a whole lot of vitamins
**TURMERIC
Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. With turmeric in the food, the antioxidant ability of your body will be improved.It helps to boost the memory. It also helps to lower cholesterol.
There are many more seasonings and spices to make a secret of good cooking to our food. We can not exhaust all in one piece of writing.
However, I hope that with this, the next time you stop over at a shop to buy seasoning, you really will know how much your health will be improved. Seasonings are not just to add flavour or taste to your cooking.
