FRIED CHESTNUTS - PORTUGESE DELICASY

FRIED CHESTNUTS

Ok so this is a delicacy that we have seen on the streets in Portugal. I have never tried a fried chestnut, so it was a totally new experience for me.

They tasted amazing and super delicious, it was like a mashed potato, with bacon and beans flavour.

Roasted chestnuts are popular street food in Portugal. Called castanhas assadas ("roasted chestnuts") in Portuguese, it is sold around November, when Dia de São Martinho (St. Martin's Day) is celebrated across the country.

Traditionally, newly harvested chestnuts are eaten around a bonfire on this day.

I would totally have them again!!!! WHO TRIED THESE?

I eat roasted chestnuts when I visit Japan, but I never tried fried chestnuts! Now I can’t wait for my trip later this month!

I think I need to move to Portugal... Yum!!!

😄😇😄

@creatr

I love roast chestnuts. You have to try boiled chestnuts, they are also great. Because of roasted and cooked chestnuts, autumn was my favorite season.

These sound delicious! With bacon flavor how could you go wrong!

i really like it , Please @allasyummyfood Follow me and i'll follow you ! :)

ohh realy ? never?

it is very nice and also you can mixed whit any stew...
before putting them to the fire or to the oven cuts with a knife ... that remain open, like crushed olives

Bundle of thanks for telling the recipe preparation ....

@allasyummyfood Indeed chestnuts are a true gift of taste and pleasure, one of my favourite things from my homeland of Portugal. But they are never fried! Not only would that be ridiculously unhealthy :P but street vendors actually freshly roast them on coal. Enjoy them while you can, they don't stick around beyond December, if you're lucky. And here in Canada we can buy chestnuts from Portugal in some Portuguese grocers or bakeries, but this year supply is low because of all the fires and disasters happening in the country...
And this isn't a biased note but from experience, the more commonly seen Italian or (especially) Chinese chestnuts, don't even come CLOSE to the amazing quality of chestnuts from Portugal!
Can you tell I love this food :-P
I made a video of a surprise find actually, when I visited back home 2 years ago!

@allasyummyfood my dear sister this does not become fried !!!!

this is made on fire ... they are roasted

love :)

My husband and I are utter chestnut addicts. Locally, here in WV, it was a bumper crop year! We have trees near us and can pick them up. But we got gifted with a few gallons from friends!

Chestnut heaven!

I first ate chestnuts on a school trip to New York City. Roasted on the street, just like your pictures show. I loved them right away once I figured out how to get them out of their shells? peels? And it was really cold that day so I bought extra and put them in my coat pockets as hand warmers.

Thanks for the wonderful memories!

I usually just cook them in my instant pot, peel them and add to everything! Great in salad, great alone, great sauteed in butter with salt and pepper or other spices, great as a sweet desert with a bit of cinnamon and other spices!

Is this same what we here have and grows?

Eu adoro Castanhas assadas :P

For a second i thought they was dates

This is from my country... Portugal... Nice

fried chestnuts taste is really good

Oh Wow! They look tasty! They are big!

hmmmm! Castanhas :D

Hello I'm excited to see the images of the CASTAÑA, in Venezuela we eat a lot of that, but unlike how they prepare it "fried" in that country, here they are "cooked", we put it in water until it boils, softens and is ready , we hope it cools a little, we peel and eat.

Looks yummy!

Sorry it's not fried it's roasted, they are made with charcoal and some salt only ☺️☀️☀️☀️

YUM!!! I really want to try these, bet they are soooo good =) This is great, thank you for posting. upvoted
