There are monsters hiding in the house. Many, actually. They are watching you, waiting. The monster lives in your refrigerator, oven, and kitchen cabinet. They are nothing but the food you eat. How your diet may be able to haunt you far beyond heart disease and diabetes.
Human history is full of terrible episodes that are none other than these basic needs. At that time, some basic foods had been mass murderers.
What are that ? And how do they kill the people who eat them? Here are 3 types of food that once took the lives of many humans. Quotes from Listverse on Sunday (2/7/2017):
- Bread
During the 1800s, the UK population grew faster than ever. In fact, by 1850, London had become the largest city in history.
This sudden and enormous growth causes serious shortages of everyday goods.
The food producers quickly responded by packing their products with whatever they encountered in the garage.
Such as pester from Paris and even lime is used to replace the actual material.
But the worst is the use of alum toxins. Safer alum versions are used for things like preservatives, but dangerous varieties-used in modern laundry detergents-are used very much in bread.
Not only makes bread in large quantities, but also gives a more attractive white color.
The problem is, alum prevents the actual food and is not absorbed by the intestine. Ultimately, this practice leads to severe epidemics of malnutrition, diarrhea, and even the death of many children.
- Corn
The early 20th century South America was gripped by a terrible new disease.
Skin lesions are sick, redness and swelling suffered in orphanages and psychiatric wards. It became a mysterious disease, which consumed more than 100,000 lives between 1906 and 1940.
Worse yet, no one can tell from where this "pellagra" disease originated.
Until Dr. Joseph Goldberger came to research. The Pennsylvania doctor joined the Health Service in 1899 and has spent the past decades exploring the country to solve the medical mystery.
It occurred to him that this disease only affects very poor people, who survive in food consisting mostly of good cheap corn. However, his findings are not in line with doctors in the south that the mysterious disease is caused by germs.
But Dr. Goldberger believes the disease is caused by food. To prove that the disease is not contagious by swallowing a scab from the wound on the infected patient as well as the infected urine and feces.
He did not catch the disease. Thanks to his research, he revealed that pellagra in South America at that time was caused by most niacin due to excessive consumption of corn and lack of other dietary substances such as milk, protein and others.
- Nutmeg
In the 1600s there was a terrible war between England and the Netherlands. It was the most brutal and bloody conflict that lasted for years. The reason is nutmeg.
Nutmeg has become an international conflict because the food is a status symbol.
Spice-friendly at the time was a golden tub and only a wealthy man could keep it in their kitchen cabinet.
The nutmeg is enjoyed by Europeans because of its exotic taste and can improve the taste of food. Not only that, the nutmeg is believed to be a healer of the Black Death, or pessimist.
The problem is that nutmeg is found only in Indonesia. Because of greed and the desire to monopolize, there was a battle between Holland and England.
Fortunately the bloody conflict ended in 1667. Where the British signed an agreement swapping the Run island - a nutmeg producer in Indonesia with the then Dutch-controlled Manhattan.
